Hitting homers prevails once again, but Emmet Sheehan shows his best stuff yet – Dodgers Digest

The Dodgers started their road trip against the Diamondbacks with a low-scoring affair, as the bats didn’t take advantage of the early chances they got and the D-backs eventually took the lead the easy way with homers. They added on late and their pen shut the Dodgers down to hand them a 4-1 loss.

A resurgent Eduardo Rodriguez started off with a clean frame, but then allowed the first two batters of the 2nd to reach to put him in a jam. He got a fly out that ended up cornering the runners, then got a groundout from Max Muncy that saw Mookie Betts get cut down at home. A single followed to load the bases, but nothing came of it.

The Dodgers did start the scoring in the 3rd, as Shohei Ohtani led off with a double and then Andy Pages blooped a ball over a diving left fielder for a double that left runners at second and third. Freddie Freeman grounded out to score Shohei for a 1-0 lead … but they couldn’t take advantage further than that.

Rodriguez then concluded with three scoreless frames to get the D-backs through the 6th.

Emmet Sheehan arguably had his best start of the year, at least in terms of the stuff he showed and how easy it looked for him.

With one out in the 1st, Sheehan allowed a double, after that he retired 15 batters in a row into the 6th inning. With one out in that inning, he gave up a solo shot to Tommy Troy (the first of his career) to tie things up at 1-1.

Sheehan retired the next three, but then gave up another solo shot, this time to Nolan Arenado to make it 2-1 D-backs to end his night in the 7th.

The line might not look like a huge improvement, but it was: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 92 Pitches.

In relief, Alex Vesia got a pair of outs to end the 7th, but Jack Dreyer returned to give up a bunt single with two outs in the 8th, and then a two-run bomb from Ketel Marte to make it 4-1.

The D-backs pen has long been a weakness, but they faced the minimum over the final three innings, as a Shohei infield single was erased by a double play, much to Geraldo Perdomo‘s amusement.

38-22. Oh no! Disaster!

The series resumes tomorrow at 3:40 PM HT/6:40 PM PT/9:40 PM ET. It’ll be Eric Lauer making his second start as a Dodger against Michael Soroka.
