Fernando Alonso and the missed Mercedes opportunity: Lewis Hamilton’s final “snub”
Fernando Alonso has always been a fast driver — incredibly fast — but perhaps one particular quality has been missing throughout his Formula 1 career: the ability to consistently choose the right projects at the right moment in order to fully maximize his extraordinary talent behind the wheel.
After winning his two Formula 1 world titles with Renault, the Spanish driver embarked on a series of career decisions that ultimately limited his chances of adding more championships to his legacy. His move to McLaren at the time was not necessarily a wrong decision on paper, but he unexpectedly found himself alongside a young Lewis Hamilton who, despite being a rookie, was already capable of pushing Fernando Alonso into enormous difficulty. Everyone remembers how that explosive 2007 Formula 1 season eventually unfolded.
From that point onward, Fernando Alonso rarely managed to place himself in a genuinely title-winning environment again. The closest he truly came to another championship was arguably during his Ferrari years, and on more than one occasion bad luck also played a decisive role in preventing him from securing a third world title.
Then came the well-known chapters that followed: the ill-fated McLaren-Honda reunion, other transitional projects, the return with Alpine, and finally Aston Martin — the team that was supposed to offer him a serious technical platform capable of fighting at the front under Formula 1’s new regulations. Instead, during the 2026 Formula 1 season, Aston Martin has emerged as arguably the weakest package on the grid, with the AMR26 struggling badly both on the chassis side and on overall power unit performance. For a driver of Fernando Alonso’s caliber, it has become yet another frustrating chapter in a career full of what-ifs and missed opportunities.
Fernando Alonso’s Formula 1 career shaped by missed opportunities and difficult timing
In many ways, Fernando Alonso’s Formula 1 journey has been defined by a series of sliding doors moments that pushed him toward projects that ultimately failed to deliver championship success. Yet there was one point where everything could have changed dramatically.
According to José Manuel Galán, former Mercedes engineer, Fernando Alonso genuinely had a chance to become a Mercedes Formula 1 driver — the very team that would go on to dominate an entire era of the sport.
Speaking to SoyMotor, Galán explained that when rumors about Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari first began circulating, Toto Wolff was forced to address the situation internally at the Brackley factory. The Mercedes team principal could not hide what was happening from the staff, so he openly discussed several possible candidates who could replace the seven-time Formula 1 world champion.
One of the names mentioned was Sergio Perez, although that option reportedly failed to generate much excitement inside the factory. Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s name was also discussed, but according to Galán, the initial reaction from employees was fairly cold at that stage.
Carlos Sainz Jr. was another serious possibility and was genuinely considered by Toto Wolff. However, Galán revealed that during a large internal meeting involving the entire Brackley workforce, only around five percent of attendees raised their hands in support of the Spanish Ferrari driver.
Everything changed when Fernando Alonso’s name entered the discussion.
According to Galán, the reaction inside Mercedes was almost unanimous. At one stage, Fernando Alonso was considered a real option to replace Lewis Hamilton, and the level of support among employees reportedly bordered on a plebiscite. The response may seem surprising given the historically tense relationship between British and Spanish figures within motorsport culture, but internally the factory understood one crucial point: replacing Lewis Hamilton required a driver with extraordinary speed, elite racecraft and immense Formula 1 experience.
Fernando Alonso perfectly matched that description. Ironically, the Spaniard also spent years involved in intense rivalries and countless on-track and off-track clashes with Lewis Hamilton himself. The two drivers have long been viewed as fierce competitors and sporting enemies, making the entire scenario even more fascinating.
Lewis Hamilton reportedly encouraged Mercedes to choose Andrea Kimi Antonelli
In the end, however, Toto Wolff’s long-term vision prevailed.
Mercedes ultimately decided to place its faith in Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a choice that was reportedly supported strongly by Lewis Hamilton himself. According to José Manuel Galán, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion spoke very highly of the young Italian talent and actively encouraged Toto Wolff to invest in him as the future of the Mercedes project.
In many ways, it became Lewis Hamilton’s final “snub” toward Fernando Alonso. After an initial learning season filled with understandable rookie mistakes and adaptation issues, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has started delivering major satisfaction to the Anglo-German team throughout the 2026 Formula 1 campaign. His pace, maturity and technical growth are increasingly validating Mercedes’ decision.
Still, the story inevitably feels like another painful missed opportunity in Fernando Alonso’s extraordinary but often frustrating career. Today, the two-time Formula 1 world champion finds himself fighting near the back of the grid with the struggling Aston Martin AMR26, while an alternative reality could easily have placed him inside the Mercedes W17 battling George Russell for race victories and perhaps even the Formula 1 world championship.
Instead of Andrea Kimi Antonelli occupying that seat, it could have been Fernando Alonso leading Mercedes into Formula 1’s next era.
And perhaps that is the ultimate theme running through Fernando Alonso’s remarkable career: immense talent, extraordinary speed, unforgettable performances — but also a long list of unfortunate timing decisions and missed Formula 1 opportunities that forever changed the course of history.
