Former India captain Rohit Sharma continues to command strong backing and respect despite questions being raised over his recent form and fitness. His childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, has dismissed concerns, insisting that the veteran opener remains crucial to the Indian team’s ambition of winning the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit came under criticism after a lean patch in his last ODI series against New Zealand, where he managed just 61 runs across three innings. However, Lad believes such scrutiny is unnecessary given Rohit’s stature and proven track record in the 50-over format.
“Being a coach, I don’t think he needs to prove anything to anyone,” Lad told PTI Videos on Friday. “He badly wants to win the ODI World Cup. I have spoken to him, and he is very clear about what he wants in his career. I don’t think he needs to prove his fitness. Despite the age factor, he is still fit enough.”
Lad emphasised Rohit’s importance, adding that his experience will be key for India in a global tournament.
“Critics keep talking,” he said. “It’s their job. India needs Rohit’s experience if we want to reach the final. Technique-wise, there is no problem. Moreover, in 50-over cricket, you need to settle a bit. Rohit has the technique that allows him to settle and then launch himself.”
Lad also highlighted Rohit’s IPL performances, noting his balanced approach.
“In the IPL, he also showed his technique. He wasn’t only playing big shots but was also taking singles and doubles. I don’t understand the critics’ point of view. My view is that he must be in the team.”
Responding to claims that the next six months are crucial, Lad added, “Why are the next six months crucial only for Rohit? They are crucial for all players. Everyone needs to play well to retain their place in the team. I can guarantee 100 per cent that Rohit will definitely play in the 50-over World Cup in 2027.”
With Rohit now focused solely on ODIs, having retired from the other two formats, Lad emphasised his determination. “He knows that if he has to play, there should be a reason. The reason is to win the ODI World Cup. He wants to win that for India at any cost. I am sure he will retire only after that.”
He spoke further about Rohit’s work ethic. “Rohit not playing any other format does not mean he has free time and is enjoying life,” said Lad. “He is practising every day and constantly working on his fitness. Don’t worry, he is preparing himself hard for the World Cup.”
The coach also reminded critics of Rohit’s incredible achievements. “He has retired from Tests and T20Is, not ODIs,” he said. “His ODI record is impeccable. I don’t think there is any pressure on him.”
Lastly, Lad asked Rohit to trust the formula that has brought him success in the past.
“Rohit should stay at the wicket, and once he settles down, he is a dangerous player,” he said. “I would like to remind him of how he played in the 2019 World Cup. He should play like that again. He should play domestic 50-over matches. Criticism will come, but Rohit should ignore it. He should enjoy playing.”
