Speaking on a recent episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman addressed reports that contract negotiations had hit a snag. Rather than viewing the situation as a setback, he suggested that discussions are continuing in the right direction and progressing as expected.
“I’m not concerned about the Manny Malhotra situation as it stands right now, I still think as we sit here…I still think that things are moving in the proper direction,” Friedman said.
Those comments arrived after reports suggested that negotiations had slowed while both sides worked through financial details and coaching staff considerations. However, Friedman’s assessment points toward a standard contract process rather than a breakdown in discussions.
Malhotra has emerged as the clear favorite for the position. According to multiple insider reports, the Canucks have shown little indication of seriously pursuing other candidates.
The organization’s leadership group, which includes general manager Ryan Johnson and hockey operations executives Daniel and Henrik Sedin, reportedly views Malhotra as the preferred choice to guide the next phase of the franchise.
