India captain Harmanpreet Kaur etched her name into the record books in the very first match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, becoming the country’s highest run-scorer in the history of the tournament. The landmark moment came in India’s tournament opener against Pakistan at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Harmanpreet surpassed the record held by former captain Mithali Raj, who had previously amassed 726 runs in the competition for India.

Following her innings on Sunday, Harmanpreet now sits at the top of the list for India with 762 runs in 40 matches at an average of 25.40 and a strike rate of 111.73.

Walking in after the early dismissals of Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet anchored the innings superbly. She played a composed knock, rotating the strike effectively while Smriti Mandhana counter-attacked at the other end. The pair stitched together a crucial 91-run partnership, blending caution with calculated aggression to guide India past the 100-run mark. Harmanpreet was eventually dismissed by Fatima Sana after scoring a steady 36 off 35 balls.

Her recent form has further cemented her legacy. Just last month, she became only the third batter to cross the 4,000-run mark in Women’s T20Is, joining an elite list alongside Suzie Bates and Mandhana.

In an illustrious career spanning 177 innings, the veteran batter has amassed 4,111 runs at an average of 30.22, including one century and 17 half-centuries. She now stands on the brink of another major milestone — becoming the first cricketer to make 200 T20I appearances.
