The Toronto Maple Leafs’ search to fill out their front office is in full force, and that has brought plenty of names into the rumor mill in the weeks since Brad Treliving was relieved of his duties.
That’s only going to continue the longer the hiring process drags on, and on Thursday, an interesting new candidate was floated by Sportsnet insider Nick Kypreos: Judd Moldaver, who is notably the agent for superstars Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews.
“I’ll throw in a name for you, I’ll throw out a name that has some interest. Player agents are out there—Judd Moldaver is the agent for Auston Matthews, who I think would have some interest. I don’t know where or how that would fit in, but the precedent has been set in Edmonton with Jeff Jackson, a former agent of Connor McDavid,”
Moldaver, of course, helped McDavid, 29, ink his recent two-year, $25 million extension with the Oilers, as well as Matthews’, 28, four-year, $53 million extension with the Maple Leafs. Both contracts run through the end of the 2027–28 campaign, when they will be eligible for free agency come the summer of 2028.
Kypreos has been plugged in on much of what’s gone on not just with the Maple Leafs’ front office vacancies, but others around the league, including the Canucks and Devils. That’s not to say Moldaver is a lock to come to Toronto by any means, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on—and another big name to throw into the mix.
If he were to join the Maple Leafs’ front office in some capacity, you’d have to imagine it would be, in part, to further strengthen their relationship with Matthews and potentially encourage him to stick around long term. If the goal truly is to retool around the two-time 60-goal scorer and William Nylander rather than blow it up and rebuild, then you can understand why it would be worth a shot for Keith Pelley.
