Lamont Roach was held to a second straight, contentious stalemate with his bout against Isaac Cruz declared a majority draw in San Antonio on Saturday.
Roach, who controversially drew with Gervonta Davis in March, produced a late rally after surviving a third round knockdown, but was ultimately denied on the scorecards after a frantic battle with Cruz at the Frost Bank Center.
Roach, moving up another division after failing to secure a rematch with Davis, was stripped of his WBA super featherweight title when the first bell rang.
Cruz, aptly nicknamed ‘Pitbull’, marched forward from the opening bell and was landing to head and body in the opener.
Roach (25-1-3, 10 KOs) was dragged into a fire-fight and despite having some success of his own, he was being overwhelmed by Cruz’s relentless pressure and aggressiveness.

The Mexican, who overcame Omar Salcido Gamez in July, scored a crucial breakthrough in the third round, stunning Roach with a left hook, which had the 30-year-old stumbling back into the ropes.
Roach’s right hand touched the canvas and the referee awarded a knockdown in Cruz’s favour.
‘Pitbull’ was in control by the halfway mark, but ‘The Reaper’ responded, landing his left hook to good effect in the sixth round.
Cruz (28-3-2, 18 KOs) was deducted a point in the seventh for clinching and his frustrations continued to grow as Roach figured him out and made him miss continuously.

Cruz appeared void of ideas, boxing on the back foot, as Roach’s IQ and accuracy banked him round after round.
‘Pitbull’ seemed on the brink of losing the 11th round, but detonated two monstrous left hooks with the pair unloading in a furious exchange until the bell.
Roach got the best of a tight final round and many believed the Washington man had done enough to emerge victorious.
However, it wasn’t to be with two judges scoring the bout a 113-113 draw to overrule a 115-111 card in favour of Cruz.

Cruz retained his WBC interim super lightweight title, but there could be calls for a rematch given the controversy.
“All I want is a fair shake,” Roach said post-fight.
“It’s some bulls***. I don’t know what I got to do. I’m tired of this s***.”
Cruz said he would agree to a rematch on the condition that a different referee was in charge.

“Absolutely [we can rematch.
“With a different referee though.
“Without the referee being on his side.”
Foster dominates Fulton
O’Shaquie Foster outboxed and outclassed Stephen Fulton to win the WBC interim lightweight title by unanimous decision.
The pair were supposed to have fought for Foster’s WBC super featherweight crown, but Fulton, the reigning WBC featherweight champion, came in two pounds over the 130 pound limit at Friday’s weigh in.
Fulton (23-2, 8 KOs) simply had no answers for Foster’s precision and power and struggled to keep the home favourite at bay throughout.

Fulton’s work looked desperate as he looked to get on the inside in the last few rounds in a bid to swing the momentum, but Foster (24-3, 12 KOs) was able to pick him off with his razor-sharp jab and the result was in no doubt as the fight went to the scorecards.
All three judges scored the bout in favour of Foster with scores of 117-111, 118-110 and 119-109 confirming his dominance.
It’s unclear whether ‘Shock’ will return to super featherweight or now campaign at lightweight.
Lara sees off Gonzalez
Erislandy Lara retained his WBA middleweight world title dropping Johan Gonzalez twice on route to a comfortable points win.
Lara (32-3-3, 19 KOs) was scheduled to face unified champion, Janibek Alimkhanuly, but the fight was pulled on Tuesday after Janibek tested positive for the banned substance meldonium in a VADA test.
The 42-year-old champion looked on course for an early night after flooring Gonzalez (36-5, 34 KOs) in the opening round.

But after the Venezuelan beat the count, the pair laboured for almost the entirety of the fight, cancelling each other out in what was turning out to be a forgettable contest.
However, Lara produced some late drama, knocking down Gonzalez again in the final seconds of the last round.
The 34-year-old beat the count and made it to the final bell where the result reflected Lara’s dominance.
All three judges scored the bout in favour of Lara with scores of 118-108, 119-107 and 120-106.
Ramos Jr closes in on world title
Jesus Ramos Jr closed in on a middleweight world title shot, after overcoming Shane Mosley Jr.
Ramos Jr (24-1, 19 KOs) and Mosley Jr (22-5, 12 KOs) went toe-to-toe throughout the 12 rounds, although it was Ramos Jr who got the better of the action and two scores at 117-111 and another at 116-112 confirmed his dominance.
The 24-year-old American secured the WBC interim title and put himself in pole position for a shot at WBC champion, Carlos Adames.

Martin back to winning ways
Frank Martin returned to winning ways in spectacular fashion, icing Rances Barthelemy in the fourth round.
Martin (19-1, 13 KOs), coming off a devastating knockout loss to Gervonta Davis last June, moved up in weight and the 30-year-old put the division on notice with his finish.
‘The Ghost’ knocked down Barthelemy (30-4-1, 15 KOs) in the fourth round, and despite the Cuban getting to his feet, a further left hand later in the round laid him out cold.
