Italian Open 2026 Day One Recap

Italian Open 2026 Day One Recap

Day One of the 2026 Internazionali BNL d’Italia is in the books, and the Roman clay saw 13 matches completed despite the rain interruptions.

Perhaps that is one benefit of a 12-day Masters tournament: a rain delay doesn’t derail the event, as Rome doesn’t have covered courts until next year.

Still, the early action in the draw produced some ok storys: a gutsy comeback win with match points saved for Altmaier, a solid home favourite victory for Arnaldi, and an upset for Hanfmann over Hurkacz.

Here are all the Round of 128 results from Day One, followed by the key matches and talking points:

Key Match Recap

altmaieraltmaier

Daniel Altmaier def. Zhizhen Zhang (PR) 4-6 7-6(3) 6-4

Altmaier saved two match points on his own serve (at 3-5, 15/40 in the second set) before closing out the comeback victory. This was his first ATP Masters 1000 match win of the season. He will now face two-time Rome champion Alexander Zverev in R2. Winnable for him if Zverev isn’t over his Madrid loss.

Matteo Arnaldi (WC) def. Jaume Munar 6-3 3-6 6-3

The home favourite and recent Cagliari Challenger champion picked up his first tour-level win of 2026. He’ll take on 6th seed Alex de Minaur.

Yannick Hanfmann def. Hubert Hurkacz 6-7(3) 7-6(2) 6-2

The biggest notable result of the day. Hanfmann took out the higher-ranked Hurkacz in a tight, high-quality three-setter. The German made the quarters back in 2023, and he’s a bit of a handful on clay, while Hurkacz’s drop-off is one to study.

Damir Dzumhur def. Adrian Mannarino 6-4 6-0

A very one-sided win for Dzumhur. Mannarino struggled badly, and I hadn’t realised how poor his clay court record is: 24 straight losses at M1000 and Grand Slam level on the surface. Incredible really. Maybe he should drop string tension to get some more power? 😁

Alejandro Tabilo def. Pablo Carreno Busta (Q) 6-2 6-1

Dominant performance from Tabilo as he cruised past the experienced Spaniard. It’s unfathomable that I thought PCB might be the next great Spanish clay-court player after Nadal. Yet he’s won just one Masters 1000 title, on hard courts!

Rain Impacts

  • Jacob Fearnley vs. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard: Suspended at 5-3 in the first set.
  • Dino Prizmic vs. Marton Fucsovics: Suspended at 6-4 0-0.
  • Federico Cina vs. Alexander Blockx: Did not start
