Day Two of the 2026 Internazionali BNL d’Italia delivered another packed schedule at the Foro Italico. While the Italian crowd turned out in force, hoping for deep home runs from Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Sonego, and Luca Nardi, it ended up being a rough day for the locals as their straight-set defeats dominated the headlines.
The ‘biggest’ win came from Tomas Macháč, who produced a solid performance to knock out Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, continuing the Greek’s disappointing season, which will soon see him drop outside the top 100.
Elsewhere, Alexei Popyrin dismantled Berrettini on Campo Centrale, while Buse took out Sonego, leaving 6 losers and 2 winners on the day for the Italian contingent.
There were also impressive wins for veterans Marin Cilic and Roberto Bautista Agut, qualifiers Dino Prizmic and Cristian Garin kept their momentum going, and Mariano Navone added another strong clay-court result, with Denis Shapovalov going down in straight sets.
Here’s a full recap of all the Day Two action in Rome, including results, standout performances, and the key storylines heading into the Round of 64.

Key Match Recap

Tomas Macháč def. Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 7-6(4)
The biggest result of the day. Machac came out aggressive, served brilliantly, and recovered from letting a 5-3 lead slip in the second set to take the tiebreak. He improves to 2-1 in the H2H against Tsitsipas and will face 7th seed Daniil Medvedev next.
Tsitsipas falls to 3-4 on clay this season with another early exit. I think he’s playing slightly better but I think he should drop down a level and try to win a few more matches.
Alexei Popyrin def. Matteo Berrettini 6-2 6-3
Popyrin produced a dominant straight-sets win over the Italian home favourite on Campo Centrale. This was Popyrin’s first Masters 1000 victory of the 2026 season. He’ll meet 26th seed Jakub Mensik in the second round.
I thought Berrettini was going to show some form on clay when he took out Medvedev 6-0 6-0, but he’s barely won a match since, losing in the 1st round in Madrid, in the Quarters at the Cagliari Challenger, and now in the 1st round here.
Ignacio Buse def. Lorenzo Sonego 6-3 6-3
A tough day for the Italian crowd as Buse cruised past Sonego in straight sets. Sonego has played only 8 matches this season, winning just 3, and he’s yet to win back-to-back.
Alexander Blockx def. Federico Cina (WC) 4-6 6-1 6-3
The young Belgian (career-high No. 36 and fresh off a Madrid semi-final) had to battle after losing the first set in his rain-delayed match that should have been played yesterday.
He adjusted his court positioning, stepped forward, and turned the match around convincingly. Blockx will face the 29th seed, Tallon Griekspoor, next.
