‘It’s Ridiculous’ — Caitlin Clark Goes Off on ‘Disappointing’ WNBA Referees for Controversial Technical Foul Call

‘It’s Ridiculous’ — Caitlin Clark Goes Off on ‘Disappointing’ WNBA Referees for Controversial Technical Foul Call

Caitlin Clark once again found herself at the center of another officiating firestorm on Monday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Indiana Fever overcame a 13-point first-quarter (6-19) deficit with a roaring 35-point second-quarter explosion to tie it up by halftime, 41-41. They built on this momentum and registered an 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury, improving their season’s record to 10-7.

But despite the dominating victory, the game’s biggest storyline revolved around the chaotic whistle-fest during the fourth quarter, when a common defensive foul exploded into a heated exchange. The eight-second sequence handed out multiple technical fouls to 5 players, bringing the total tech calls to 6 for the game.

Caitlin Clark Calls Out the Officiating After Earning 5th Technical Foul

With less than eight minutes remaining on the game clock, the Mercury were down by 54-73. They were gearing up for their offense when a physical altercation broke out at the charity stripe between Caitlin Clark and DeWanna Bonner after the former committed a defensive foul. Heated words were exchanged while the referees and fellow players intervened to break up the scuffle.

The result? The officiating crew went on a whistling rampage, hitting Clark, Sophie Cunningham, Bonner, and Alyssa Thomas with technicals. Just ten seconds later, Myisha Hines-Allen also earned her second technical of the game for shoving Alyssa Thomas, leading to an automatic ejection.

For Clark, this marked her fifth technical foul of the 2026 season, tying her with Angel Reese and leaving her dangerously close to an automatic suspension. With 27 regular seasons left for the Fever, the former ROTY is only three technicals away from gaining an automatic one-game WNBA suspension.

“It’s ridiculous. I got a technical for clapping,” vented Clark during the postgame press conference. “We should all just go on the calendar now and pick a game I’m going to be suspended for if I’m going to get technical for clapping.”

The two-time All-Star will have to keep her reactions in check to avoid sitting out. Her presence as the Fever’s primary playmaker is crucial for the team’s deep run this season. The stakes are high after last season, when the team finished with a 24-20 record and was eliminated by the Aces in the Semifinals in a close 2-3 five-game series.

The whistle drama completely overshadowed Clark’s stellar performance on the hardwood, where she emerged as the highest scorer of the night with 24 points, 3 rebounds, and 9 assists on 8-of-17 shooting from the field and 3-of-10 from beyond the arc.

Kelsey Mitchell chipped in 22 points, while Monique Billings had a game-high 10 rebounds with 14 points to secure a crucial bounce-back win for the Fever after two consecutive losses to the Atlanta Dream.

The star guard must balance competitive passion with composure if the Fever intends to contend for the 2026 WNBA title.
