It’s Time for the Detroit Red Wings to Move Young Assets for Established NHLers

It may be time for the Detroit Red Wings to move some pieces for established NHLers

NHL Media: Devante Smith-Pelly on the NHL Network on the Detroit Red Wings not having the scoring depth and that maybe it’s time for them to start looking to trade some younger pieces for some more established NHLers to help them get back into the playoffs and contending.

Smith-Pelly: “Yeah, it’s such an interesting season for them, because, you know, I think at the start they were shooting the lights out. The goaltending was good, and both things just instantly flipped at the exact same time, right? They weren’t getting the stops again, and then they just weren’t able to score.

So, there has to be a, you know, a full kind of look through the whole organization. Why, why is this keep happening in March and April? Why we keep putting ourselves in pretty good position. Now, obviously, not all the players are the same every single year, but why? Why every single time in March and April do we not get it done?

So, man, I think there’s going to be some tough conversations to be had regarding, you know, a lot of players. Now, I’m not saying (Moritz) Seider or (Dylan) Larkin and or anyone like that. But, you know, anyone else in between that has to be some, some sort of a conversation. Not (Simon) Edvinsson. But there’s got to be some sort of a conversation, you know. And they just have to, they just have to get better.”

Bill Spaulding: “Well, it does make you wonder. Steve Yzerman did make a move at the deadline, bringing Justin Faulk in. That was at least a moderate splash, but maybe not the splashiest move that they could have made. The Star Power is there. And you look at the young forwards, Dylan Larkin centering a guy like Lucas Raymond. You have Alex DeBrincat scoring 40 goals. You mentioned Seider and Edvinsson on the back end and some good young defensemen.

But is it the depth is that? Is that where you think that the biggest problem ends up being these, down the stretch, these last few years, finding depth scoring?”

Smith-Pelly: “Yeah, I think they’re, you know, a couple of months ago, there was a time where Todd McClellan called their depth just jersey on most nights. So anytime a coach says that about your bottom six or your, your support players, that’s obviously a red flag.

But, you know, some of these younger players that they’re hoard, you know, they’ve got some young players, their AHL team is really good, maybe it’s time to turn them into real players, right?

NHL Rumors: Washington Capitals, Florida Panthers, and the Winnipeg Jets

Like these young players, they can’t all come and play at once. Maybe it’s time to put something in a package and get some real proven guys and kind of get it done now.”
