Jacob Quillan credits Laughton, Domi & Lorentz for easing NHL transition: Leafs Morning Take

When’s the last time Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard were held pointless in back-to-back games?

Suffice it is to say, it was another interesting night in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. That’s where the conversation started on the Thursday edition of Leafs Morning Take.

In Edmonton, the Anaheim Ducks got a game-winner from Cutter Gauthier to outlast the Edmonton Oilers 6–4, evening their series at one game apiece. Meanwhile, Wyatt Johnston scored in double overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 2–1 series lead over the Minnesota Wild. Elsewhere, the Philadelphia Flyers grabbed a commanding 3–0 series lead on the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 5–2 win. We’re only five days into the playoffs, but Round 1 has already delivered chaos—complete with plenty of overtime drama.

After that, we talked about the ongoing GM search. Not many developments to report, so just like everyone else, we play the waiting game. That said, Rosie did weigh in on the Tie Domi buzz. He doesn’t see the fit. He’s all for the Leafs bringing in former players, but it has to make sense. Furthermore, we discussed the Shane Doan news. In case you missed it, the Canucks were granted permission by the Leafs to talk to Doan about a management position. Regardless of what happens there, it will be fascinating to see if Doan’s back in Toronto next season. He was Brad Treliving’s special advisor.

Meantime, the Marlies kicked off their best-of-3 series with Rochester on Wednesday night with an impressive 5-0 beatdown victory. Artur Akhtyamov notched the easy 16 save shutout. Speaking of which, ahead of the Calder Cup Playoffs opener, we had a chance to catch up with Marlies forward Jacob Quillan on Tuesday. He previewed the Marlies’ series against Rochester, while reflecting on how his late-season NHL stint helped build confidence heading into the postseason. He breaks down the jump from the American Hockey League to the National Hockey League, the adjustment process, and what stood out most during his time at the top level. The rookie also shares the story behind his first NHL goal, the excitement of playing against childhood heroes like Nathan MacKinnon and Alex Ovechkin, and gives credit to veteran Scott Laughton for helping ease his transition. Quillan wraps things up by highlighting the growth of young goaltenders Dennis Hildeby and Artur Akhtyamov within the organization, offering insight into why both have promising futures ahead.

David Pagnotta will be in for Jay Rosehill on the Friday edition of Leafs Morning Take. We’ll continue to discuss the latest. Plus, TSN Hockey Analyst Jamie NOODLES McLellan will drop by the show once again.
