Jessica Schilder 21.09 DLR/WL, seven world leads in Shanghai/Kequiao

SHANGHAI/KEQIAO (CHN, May 16): Jessica Schilder’s new Diamond League record of 21.09 in the women’s shot put was the highlight of the Shanghai/Keqiao inaugural Wanda Diamond League 2026 meeting. It was the Performance of the Day. Eight more meet records were set on Saturday afternoon at the China Textile City Sports Center, with seven world leads and two more world outdoor leads. Mondo Duplantis claimed his 44th DL victory, while four athletes achieved their first-ever DL win. No World record at the end, although Duplantis tried, Kipyegon won, but Warholm lost. The noisy, relatively crowded stands witnessed the defeat of three of the seven reigning world champions who competed here in their disciplines. The next Diamond League meeting will take place in Xiamen on May 23.

Short event-by-event reviews

Women200m: Jackson in 22.07 (0.3) over Miller-Uibo (22.26, her best since 2021) followed by Battle 22.40 and Richardson 22.42.400m: Pryce (49.75) overtakes Butler (49.78) in the final meters, Naser only 7th (51.56).

1500m: Haylom in 3:55.56 MR/WL ahead of Duguma (3:55.71 PB, improved by 8 sec.) and Caldwell (3:56.12 PB), a total of 11 runners sub-4 mins, including Galvydyté (3:59.74 NR for Lithuania).

5000m (non-DL): Kipyegon in 14:24.14 WL ahead of Amebaw (14:24.21 PB) and Getachew (14:24.71 PB), twelfth Cherop (14:39.38 NR for Uganda), top 15 sub-15 mins.

3000m steeple: Chemutai in 8:51.47 MR/WL over Cherotich (8:51.48) in a photo-finish, fifth and sixth best ever times in DL. Bouzayani followed (8:58.09 NR) and 20-year-old Ethiopian Kena Tufa (8:59.66 PB, improved by 32 sec.)

100m hurdles: Russell in 12.25 MR/WL (0.4) in loaded field (7th best ever at DL meet) from Charlton (12.38 NR), who got the best first part of the race.

Long jump: Nichols with 689 (-0.2) for her premiere DL win, also had 683 and 681, enough for 1st place. Iapichino only 5th (669).

Shot put: Schilder 21.09 DLR/MR/WL/NR, best result since 2012, European best since 2005, competition decided in fifth series with Jackson (20.46) second and Mitton (20.42) third.

Men

100m: Surprising debut DL win for Leotlela from lane 1 in 9.97 (0.6) ahead of Omanyala (9.98) and Bednarek (9.98) in a close finish. Other star names finished 6-7-8 (Simbine, Tebogo, Coleman).

800m: English in 1:43.85 MR for his second DL win after 7 years, Haingura (1:43.89) second.

3000m: Abdilaahi shocked the rest of the field and won his first DL title in 7:25.77 MR/WL/NR, third European ever, ahead of R.Cheruiyot (7:26.11 PB) and Almgren (7:26.48 NR), record number of 14 finishers sub-7:30 mins, including Herrera (7:27.63 NR for Mexico) Bahrain’s Balew (7:29.60 Asian record) and Catrofe of Uruguay (8:29.72 South American record).

110m hurdles: Premiere DL win for Britt in 13.07 (0.1) =PB over Tinch (13.10).

300m hurdles: Dos Santos was leading since the start and got 33.01 MR/WL/PB (2nd best ever) ahead of Warholm (33.05).

Pole vault: Duplantis 612 MR and outdoor WL, tried at WR height 632. Was already a winner at 6 m,

Long jump (non-DL): Furlani with 843 (0.4) outdoor WL and PB, over Saraboyukov 807 (0.1), only 4 successful attempts for the top 2. Marschall second 580. Karalis is flying high, but on the bar.

Discus throw: Čeh with 70.58 MR (improved from 1st year of DL in 2010) and non-Ramona WL. Also, 70.31 and 70.25 in the series. Second Denny 3 m behind (67.54) in no-wind conditions.
