Police are investigating New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith after a woman accused him of battery, a spokesperson for the Davie (Fla.) Police Department told The Athletic on Tuesday. That is a change from a report Monday that indicated that the police department had closed the matter.

“This case has been assigned to a detective and is currently an active investigation,” the spokesperson said Tuesday. “Detectives are investigating the crimes that were alleged at the time of the incident. … We are not releasing any additional information at this time.”

Officers went to Smith’s home Sunday afternoon after a woman, who said she was his ex-girlfriend, called 911 and said Smith had assaulted her.

On the 911 call, obtained and posted by multiple publications, the woman tearfully told the police dispatcher, “My ex-boyfriend just beat me up.” She said the alleged incident happened “about an hour” before she called the police. She later confirmed on the call that the person she was referring to was Smith, the quarterback traded to the Jets this offseason.

The woman later posted an Instagram video of a confrontation with Smith, saying on camera that he “ran outside and attacked me.”

The Jets declined to comment on the situation. The Athletic has reached out to Smith’s representatives and will update this story if they respond.

The Jets acquired Smith in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders in March. This is Smith’s second stint with the Jets, who selected him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
