John Cena Explains Why He Created the John Cena Classic Tournament

John Cena is opening up about the inspiration behind the John Cena Classic, and the idea appears to be deeply personal.

While speaking to Adam’s Apple, Cena said the project is something he has been thinking about for a long time. He also confirmed that the concept is his own creation and admitted that WWE is still working through the details.

“Oh my god, I’m super excited. It’s awesome. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and again, we’re still working things out—and I like that. I like that it’s a work in progress, but this is absolutely from me. I can’t tell you how excited I am about it.”

That comment makes it clear the John Cena Classic is more than just another WWE initiative. According to Cena, this is a project he personally conceived and one he is heavily invested in. Cena went on to say that the next major step is finalizing when and where the event will take place.

“I can’t wait till we announce the date and location. I think that’s obviously step one, and we’ll go from there.”

He then explained the core philosophy behind the concept. Cena said he enjoys stepping back and watching what performers can do when given a real opportunity under the brightest lights.

“I like turning the radar off, and I like seeing what people can do. I like seeing potential when the bright lights are on, and maybe that’s the nucleus of the John Cena Classic. It’s how I got my start.”

That final line may be the most revealing part of Cena’s explanation. He sees the John Cena Classic as a way to give rising talent the same kind of platform that helped launch his own WWE career.

Cena first announced the John Cena Classic at WWE Backlash 2026. Since then, fans have debated what the project will actually look like, especially after Dave Meltzer that the format is still being finalized internally.

Even with the specifics still in development, Cena’s comments make the purpose of the project much clearer. The goal is to create an opportunity for younger wrestlers to prove themselves when the pressure is highest. For now, WWE is still working out the format, but Cena has made it clear that the heart of the John Cena Classic is giving new talent a chance to shine the same way he once did.
