John Cena Responds To Mixed Reaction Over WWE John Cena Classic Announcement

John Cena is fully aware fans are split on his new WWE project — and he’s not backing away from it.

After announcing the John Cena Classic during WWE Backlash, Cena received a pretty mixed reaction online. Some fans liked the idea of a new fan-voted WWE competition, while others were confused about how the format would even work. The day after Backlash, Cena took to Twitter to directly address the criticism and admit the concept is still far from perfect. Cena also admitted he understands the project could completely fail.

“The John Cena Classic may not be perfect by any means yet it’s authentically me (I am not perfect either) and reflects my values and beliefs.”

“I’m aware that there is the risk it might be a total failure and I’m not afraid of that and believe it’s still worth stepping ‘in the arena.’”

Even though his in-ring career is officially over, Cena explained that his current goal in WWE is helping create opportunities for younger talent. Cena also made it clear WWE is still figuring parts of the concept out behind the scenes.

“My ‘why’ in WWE is to consistently be as useful as possible for as long as possible, with my in ring career at an end, my ‘why’ is to use whatever energy or relevance I have left in hopes to create a launchpad of opportunity for all talent to show their skills while simultaneously creating a unique experience for our dedicated fan base.”

“More details to come as we figure all this out!”

The John Cena Classic was announced at Backlash as a new WWE and NXT crossover competition where fans will help vote on who ultimately becomes champion. WWE has not announced an official start date yet.

At this point, Cena sounds fully committed to making the project work, even if fans are still unsure what to expect from it.
