Kansas City Chiefs among leading contenders to sign scandalized Stefon Diggs with Rashee Rice thrown in jail

NFL free agent Stefon Diggs is expected to draw major interest from teams heading into training camp after he was acquitted on assault and strangulation charges earlier this month.

As reported by veteran NFL reporter Jason La Canfora at SportsBoom, the star wide receiver is being closely monitored by several contenders who happen to be light at the position.

Chief among those contenders is, well, the Chiefs, who will be without receiver Rashee Rice indefinitely due to an upcoming 30-day jail sentence and his ongoing recovery from a recent knee surgery. With Rice expected to be sidelined, rival team officials have told La Canfora that they see Diggs as a strong fit in Kansas City head coach Andy Reid’s offense.

While the 32-year-old Diggs may lack Rice’s explosiveness, he’s seen as a savvy wideout with a knack for getting open. Furthermore, Reid has a history of adding veteran receivers to the fold, such as he did with DeAndre Hopkins in 2024.

Diggs is coming off a Super Bowl appearance in his lone season with the New England Patriots, who released him as he faced up to five years in prison after being accused of physically attacking his female chef in a payment dispute. He pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery, and after a two-day trial, Diggs was cleared.

Although Diggs welcomed a baby with rapper Cardi B last year, the couple has repeatedly split only to get back together. He’s also faced a civil lawsuit from influencer Christopher Blake Griffith, who claims the NFL star ‘drugged and sexually assaulted’ him in May 2023.

Griffith further accused Diggs of conspiring to have him killed a week after the alleged incident to ‘suppress his gay/bisexual secrets from being exposed’ after Griffith allegedly denied Diggs’ sexual advances.

Diggs has denied the claims and has since sued Griffith for defamation only for Griffith to file a defamation countersuit.

Meanwhile, Rice, 26, was sentenced to five years’ probation and 30 days of jail time last July over his 2024 hit-and-run crash on a Dallas highway. He was able to suit up for the Chiefs last season after a judge agreed to let Rice serve the sentence at his convenience over a five-year period.

However, the wide receiver has now been ordered to serve the 30 days after he violated his probation by testing positive for marijuana, according to court documents obtained by the Daily Mail.

The Chiefs could have other options at the position, too. According to podcaster and Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer, disgruntled Philadelphia Eagles receiver AJ Brown remains one potential target for Kansas City

‘I think if you’re the Chiefs you have to look at all of these things going forward,’ Breer stressed, ‘because Rashee Rice clearly looks like somebody you have not been able to rely on.’

The Patriots are believed to be the frontrunners to sign Brown, who played for scandalized New England head coach Mike Vrabel with the Titans.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, talks between the Eagles and Patriots over the star receiver are set to continue around June 1. That date is critical to talks because June 1 is when Brown’s $40 million salary cap figure gets split between this and next year, making it easier to move his contract.

Amid ongoing speculation over his future, Brown made the most of the NFL offseason over the weekend as he finally married fiancée Kelsey Riley. The couple enjoyed a luxurious California ceremony on Saturday at the jaw-dropping Montage Laguna Beach resort.
