Ke’Bryan Hayes to the injured list, Reds activate Eugenio Suarez

The Cincinnati Reds game for Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, which you can and should read the details about here. But just because there was no game to be played doesn’t mean the Reds weren’t going to make some roster moves. 30 minutes after the game was postponed the team announced a set of roster moves with third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes being placed on the 10-day injured list with what is being called lumbar bulging disc and replacing him on the active roster is third baseman/designated hitter Eugenio Suarez, who was activated from the 10-day injured list where he had been for nearly a month while dealing with an oblique strain.

The move to the 10-day injured list for Ke’Bryan Hayes was retroactive to yesterday, which means that he can officially be activated on  May 31st if he’s healthy and ready to go. Hayes has been mired in a season-long slump, even for him. At no point this season has his batting average been above the .153 mark when a game has officially ended. His line for the season is currently .142/.195/.225 and he has just five runs batted in while having 128 plate appearances.

Hayes has battled back injuries for years. In the spring of 2025 he noted that it was something he may never be 100% again. It cost him time in 2024 when he was with the Pirates. And it cost him time in 2025, too, though not nearly as much. Even after arriving in Cincinnati after being acquired at the trade deadline he dealt with issues with his back and had to miss several games in September because of it.

Eugenio Suarez was the Reds big offseason acquisition, signing a 1-year deal with the club after hitting 49 home runs last season while splitting time with the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. He had been out to a bit of a slow start and was hitting just .231/.300/.363 with three doubles and two home runs in 25 games before he landed on the injured list following the April 22nd game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Cincinnati sent Suarez to join Triple-A Louisville in Columbus, Ohio where they were facing the Columbus Clippers this week to start a rehab assignment. On Wednesday afternoon he served as the team’s designated hitter and went 1-4 with a double off of the wall and a strikeout. Yesterday he played third base for much of the game, going 0-3 with two strikeouts before he was replaced in the 7th inning.
