Kostyuk claims her first WTA 1000 title in Madrid

Marta Kostyuk has just written a new chapter in Ukrainian tennis history when she put on a stunning performance at the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open, capturing the biggest title of her career.

In a well played final on Saturday, Kostyuk defeated the 9th-seeded Mirra Andreeva in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 to claim the Madrid title and she also extended her clay-court winning streak this year to 12 straight matches.

After securing the match point, she celebrated in her signature style – with a perfect backflip on the clay of the Manolo Santana Centre Court.

What This Win Means for Marta

This trophy isn’t just another addition to her collection; it represents several major milestones in her career:

  • First WTA 1000 Title: This is Kostyuk’s first title at the 1000 level and the third singles title of her career.
  • Historic Victory: She is the first Ukrainian player to win the Madrid Open title since the tournament began in 2009. Marta also became only the second player outside of the top 20 to win in Madrid.
  • Ranking Surge: With this win, she is projected to reach a new career-high ranking of World No. 15.
  • Clay-Court Dominance: The win extends her incredible unbeaten run on clay to 12 matches, having recently won the WTA 250 in Rouen, France.
  • Throughout the tournament, she proved her current form by dropping only one set and defeating top-ranked opponents like World No. 5 Jessica Pegula.

“It feels unbelievable” Kostyuk commented after the final.

“It took me many years to reach this point and the one word I think about right now is consistency – showing up every day no matter how hard it is, no matter how much you love or hate what you do. I’ve been doing that really well [over] the past years I think, so I’m very proud of myself and my team.”

Reflecting on her win, Kostyuk noted that Madrid hadn’t historically been her favorite tournament, making the victory even sweeter. With the French Open just weeks away, she has officially cemented herself as one of the top contenders to watch on red clay.

The Madrid Open title is Kostyuk’s third on the WTA tour and her second this season.
