Bayern Munich brace-scorer Leon Goretzka declared himself fired up for Wednesday’s Champions League return leg against PSG after Saturday’s Bundesliga draw. The German record champions – after falling behind for the third consecutive match on-the-spin – established themselves as true ‘comeback kings’ as their record-breaking 2025/26 season draws to a close.
Bayern Munich refuse to give up
In last weekend’s Bundesliga fixture against Mainz, Vincent Kompany’s Bayern battled back from a 3-0 halftime deficit to pull out a 3-4 away win. In Tuesday’s Champions League encounter for the ages, the Bavarians didn’t allow a 5-2 PSG lead to demoralize them. Two unanswered goals against the French Champions leave Kompany and the rest of the team confident they can reach the UCL Final by winning the return leg at home.
Injuries and Kompany’s Champions-League squad rotations led to Goretzka donning the captain’s armband and working as a No. 10 last week against Mainz. This week, Goretzka started as a No. 6, but once again had to move up front when an experiment involving using his German national team midfield partner Aleksandar Pavlovic as a winger didn’t work out.
Leon Goretzka winds down Bayern career in style
Goretzka scored the 1-2 directly off a free-kick shortly before the first half drew to a close. The 31-year-old then scored the 57th-minute equalizer after the change-of-ends. Goretzka – who will be departing Bayern after eight seasons at the end of the season – looks ready to close his FCB career out on the highest possible note.
The Bochum-native hopes to complete his second “triple-crown” season with Bayern since playing under Hansi Flick during the 2019/20 campaign. Goretzka has already made Bayern history as the goal-scorer who officially enabled Bayern to break the all-time Bundesliga scoring record a few weeks ago. There may be still more history for him to make.
Goretzka fired up for PSG
“That’s our focus from now on,” Goretzka told DAZN when looking ahead to Wednesday’s monster match. “The guys are fully ready. I’m really excited; I think things are going to be on fire here on Wednesday. I’m really looking forward to the game, just like all of us. We just want to make it to the final.”
