Lionel Messi and Argentina opened the 2026 World Cup with a bang, defeating Algeria in a clean-sheet win 3-0.

It didn’t take long for Argentina to score, with Messi finding the back of the net in the 17th minute after a remarkable assist from his Inter Miami teammate, Rodrigo De Paul.

Messi added two more goals in the second half in a span of 16 minutes, allowing Argentina to pull away for good and earn all three points to top Group J.

With his first-ever World Cup hat trick, Messi catapulted himself to the top of the competition’s all-time scoring leaderboard. He entered the match tied for fourth on the list with 13 goals, behind the likes of Gerd Muller and Kylian Mbappe (14), Ronaldo (15) and Miroslav Klose (16).

Now, the 38-year-old Messi is tied with Klose and has the opportunity to claim the record as the tournament progresses.
