Maple Leafs assign Ben Danford to Toronto Marlies as playoff run continues

On Monday, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that they assigned 2024 first-round draft pick Ben Danford to their American Hockey League Affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

Danford’s junior hockey career came to a close following the Hamilton Bulldogs’ Game 7 loss against the Barrie Colts during the Ontario League Eastern Conference Final. Danford split his fourth OHL season between the Oshawa Generals and Bulldogs, appearing in 45 games between the two clubs.

In his 45 games, Danford recorded three goals and 17 assists to go along with a plus-minus rating of minus-two. During the Bulldogs’ playoff run, Danford scored one goal and added two assists in 13 games. The 20-year-old’s lone goal during this playoffs was a double overtime winner against the North Bay Battalion in Game 3 of round 2.

In early December, the 31st overall selection in 2024, was named to Canada’s World Junior roster, appearing for his country for the first time at the prestigious holiday tournament. In seven games, Danford chipped in one assist, helping Canada claim bronze during the 2026 rendition of the tournament held in Minnesota.

Danford is set to join a Marlies club that is rolling pretty well. The Marlies took down Rochester in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs before upsetting the number one seed, Laval Rocket in Game 5 of the North Division Semifinals.

The Marlies are set to square off with the Cleveland Monsters in the best-of-5, North Division Finals beginning on Thursday evening in Cleveland. The Marlies and Monsters were separated by one point during the regular season, with Cleveland finishing with 83 compared to Toronto’s 82. The Marlies finished the AHL regular season with a 4-1-3 record against the Monsters and will look to carry that moment over to the postseason beginning Thursday.

While it remains to be seen if Danford will see any action, the move unites Danford and Easton Cowan, two close friends who have talked about playing together one day in the NHL. It may not be the NHL yet, but the two will now share a locker room for the first time at the professional level as the Marlies look to hunt down a Calder Cup title. During an interview this week with TSN’s Mark Masters, Danford spoke about what it would be like to be teammates with the 20-year-old Cowan.

“Me and Cow [Cowan] still talk every day. He’s a great guy to listen to and ask questions about,” Danford said. “We always joke around about how it would be cool if me and him play in the NHL together at a young age.”
