Marathon runner pays price for premature celebration as rival steals finish line win

Carson Mello appeared to have won the Delaware Marathon Running Festival with ease, only to be pipped at the post by rival Joshua Jackson

A marathon runner paid the ultimate price for celebrating too early after being pipped at the finish line at the Delaware Marathon Running Festival. Carson Mello eased up before crossing the line, only to be overhauled by a rival in the cruellest of fashions.

The incident unfolded on Sunday, with footage of the moment rapidly going viral across social media. The clip shows a topless runner, Mello, soaking up the crowd’s adulation believing he had won the race, before his competitor, Joshua Jackson, clad in a black vest, stormed past to snatch the glory.

With the London Marathon taking place on Sunday, the footage serves as a stark reminder of the perils of celebrating prematurely. Jackson edged out Mello by just two seconds, clocking a time of 2:43:12 in a thrilling contest between the two 24-year-olds. The Pennsylvanian runner triumphed in a field of over 600 competitors in the 26.2-mile race held in Wilmington.

Spectators could hardly believe their eyes as what appeared to be a one-horse race suddenly became a dramatic two-way battle as Jackson surged forward.

Even the race announcer was caught off guard, they said: “What a great, great occasion – 26.2 miles… as we see Carlos coming down.

“Now here’s your champion. Come on, Wilmington… Carson Mello.. And Joshua Jackson!”

This isn’t the first time a runner has been left bitterly regretting a premature celebration, with American athlete Ben Payne experiencing a strikingly similar moment back in 2017.

He was pipped at the post by a British Olympian during the Peachtree men’s open 10K in Atlanta, Georgia.

Payne was just metres from the finish line when he raised his finger in triumph, but Scott Overall seized his opportunity as that celebration swiftly turned to despair, with Payne beaten on the line.

The American’s heartbreak was plain to see as he stood with his hands on his hips, having thrown away what seemed like a certain victory.

The American, a US Air Force pilot, was edged out by just 9/100ths of a second by Overall, who had been the fastest British runner at the 2015 London Marathon. Overall had also represented Team GB in the 26-mile event at London 2012 and cheekily posted afterwards: “Pleased to take the win today at the Peach tree 10km. Always run through the line! #Peachy.”
