The past seven days have been some of the most unsettled we’ve seen in more than a quarter century of observing NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse.
The big headline is that your defending national champion, North Carolina, lost its first game in its last 31 outings when it lost in overtime to Boston College.
Another major development is the fact that No. 2 Stanford went empty in two games in the Eastern time zone, losing to Boston College and Villanova in the space of three days.
No. 3 Maryland advanced yesterday to 12-0 on the season, but had to withstand a late Penn State comeback to win 14-13.
Up I-95 in Baltimore, No. 4 Navy was beaten by a Loyola team that had the margin at running clock, but the Mids closed the final margin to five. But the Hounds won out, 19-14.
Co-No. 5 Florida? They found themselves opposed on the weekend not only by Arizona State, but a colony of bees that necessitated the postponement of the Big 12 opener until yesterday. The Gators were able to run out 14-8 winners.
About the only team in the top level that didn’t have an eventful week was national co-No. 5 Michigan, which beat Oregon yesterday and previously took down Denver 12-6.
I know polls aren’t the main determinant of which team or teams make it into the NCAA Division I Tournament on Selection Sunday, but all I know is that the pollsters are going to be all over the place when it comes to figuring out the top teams.
Perhaps the ol’ dartboard?
