Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are set to get a much-needed boost as Matheesha Pathirana is expected to join the squad on April 18, 2026. The Sri Lankan pacer’s arrival comes at a time when KKR are still searching for their first win this season.
KKR had made a bold move at the IPL 2026 auction, signing Pathirana for ₹18 crore after his release from Chennai Super Kings. The franchise showed strong faith by waiting for him instead of bringing in a replacement.
The young fast bowler missed the first six matches due to a calf injury he picked up during the T20 World Cup clash against Australia. That absence hurt KKR, especially in the death overs where they have struggled badly.
Now, Pathirana has cleared all fitness tests and received his No-Objection Certificate from Sri Lanka Cricket. He is expected to reach Kolkata late on Saturday and join the team ahead of their next game.
A Boost, But Not Immediate
While Pathirana will be part of the squad for the April 19 match against Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens, he is unlikely to play straight away. The team management wants to assess his match fitness during training sessions before taking a call.
KKR’s decision shows they are thinking long-term rather than rushing him back too quickly. With the season still open, they hope he can make a strong impact once fully ready.
Death Overs Hope
Nicknamed “Baby Malinga” for his unique slingy action, Pathirana is known for his sharp yorkers and control at the death. This is exactly what KKR have been missing so far in IPL 2026.
In his IPL career, Pathirana has taken 47 wickets in 32 matches. His best season came in 2023, when he picked up 19 wickets and played a key role in CSK’s title-winning run.
His return could change the team’s bowling balance and give them a reliable option in the final overs.
KKR Under Pressure
KKR are currently at the bottom of the points table after a poor start to their title defence. The team has struggled in both batting and bowling, with close games slipping away.
Pathirana’s arrival is being seen as a lifeline. Once he is ready, he could also create competition for overseas spots, with players like Sunil Narine, Cameron Green, and Tim Seifert in the mix.
KKR will hope their big signing can turn things around and bring some much-needed momentum to their campaign.
