Matt Uggla responds via social media after York City fans receive a stadium ban following the Altrincham fixture.
Some York fans woke up this week with an email notifying them of the ban, which comes after a 96th minute winner, with video footage since emerging.
Matt Uggla, the club’s chairman and owner, has since took to Twitter, replying to one of the banned fans saying, “sooner we get our own stadium the better”.
No one attempted to get on the pitch. The electronic scoreboard for the Knights is clearly not put together properly. This rips a bunch of atmosphere out of the South at the worst possible time. Bang on that Darlo fan’s (SMC boss) door, Matt.

An email read: “Season 2025/2026 – York City Football Club Supporter.
“Unfortunately, York City Football Club believes that your recent behaviour constitutes a breach of the York Community Stadium ground regulations and may result in FA sanctions being brought against York City Football Club.
“Your conduct has been carefully monitored and reviewed by the Club, North Yorkshire Police and York Stadium Management Company.
“Following this review, senior management, in consultation with our partners, have concluded that the nature of your behaviour is unacceptable and presents a serious risk to the safety of supporters and staff.
“Considering this, it has been determined that the only appropriate course of action is to issue you with a stadium ban, effective immediately, pending the outcome of a full investigation by North Yorkshire Police.”
York City Supporters Trust wrote: “York City Supporters Trust (YCST) has been made aware of reports circulating online regarding banning orders issued to some supporters following the last-minute winner against Altrincham. We made contact with York City FC as soon as we became aware of these reports.
“As many will have seen from screenshots shared online, North Yorkshire Police are investigating aspects of supporter behaviour. YCST will not comment publicly on ongoing police investigations.
“Whilst YCST is not in a position to assist Fans with ongoing police investigations, we would like to remind members and YCFC supporters that the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) provides legal advice to football supporters, and their contact information can be found on their website here.
“YCST will continue to work with York City FC on this and other matters relating to the supporter experience at home.”
Here’s how fans reacted as Matt Uggla responds after York City fans receive a stadium ban following the Altrincham fixture…
@Shanemarshall78: I can confirm, that today football has died. Thanks to @YorkSMC, fans celebrating a last minute winner to go top of the league are now banned due to an advertising board falling over. Funeral arrangements for both football and the boarding shall follow soon #ycfc
@duffieldnomad2: @yorkcityfc @YorkSMC Your actions today in handing out mass banning orders is truly disgraceful, two games away from promotion and you rid the stadium of the heart and soul of the atmosphere! exuberant celebrations for a last min winner do you expect people just to sit quietly?
@ultrasinuk: The current state of English football 🤦♂️ York City are handing out bans to their own fans for these celebrations after a 90th minute winner… Clubs with organised groups know their place and the backlash this would cause, while here fans are being pushed too far. Get organised, support each other and take a stand against your clubs and the authorities
@LW_Minsterman: The stadium bans is a sad example of bureaucrats wilfully ignoring all context, nuance or humanity, instead hiding behind “the letter of the law”. It’s a sad thing to happen at a moment when the positive energy and fan unity are as strong as I can remember. #ycfc
@jimycfc1: Everyone should boycott the food and drink counters on Saturday. Thats about the only thing we can do to send a message
@BenycfcMorrison: All the hard work you and your mum have put in, the city fully getting behind the club, the performances on the pitch….. then they decide to do this when we need everyone in it together! All because an advertising board fell over, they should be charged with wasting police time
@Skapones: @matt_uggla the gate on the south stands had been damaged for months and people just spilled through! I’ve been given the ban for celebrating a fucking goal with passion. No one hurt. The money I’ve spent ,the season ticket bought. This SMC will kill This atmosphere!!!
@MikePannett: If the @YorkSMC had any sense they’d have used the Yeovil game to remind fans about the boundaries as the electronic advertising boards they’re a new feature. This is a massive over reaction & common sense needs to prevail ASAP. @NYorksPolice York SMC I’d reconsider soonest👍🏼
@RedCramlington: Totally agree Matt , need our own stadium that the club runs for itself and not run by others that don’t care about the club or its supporters .
@Yorkie_182: Such a weird situation. Had a lad threaten my family while at the football but I hear nothing back… then people celebrate a goal and get banned. Pick and choose what you want to get annoyed about.
@MarkReynard3: Could not agree more Matt, god forbid young lads that have fallen in love with the club get excited by a goal that could see us promoted. I’m absolutely fuming.
@RichMcCart82: Do the Knights get reprimanded everytime the rugby fans trample and break all the seats? It’s a shame as the LNER atmosphere is really good. Is there any chance of the club buying the ground off the SMC or is that unrealistic?
@Maxfield1112: If this is the Stadium making the decision, at the very least have a word with them so they don’t make it out like York City FC have made the decision. It’s a really bad look for your club
@BAKinEnglish: Let’s be honest. Given the unique circumstances of the last minute winner and the importance of the South Stand atmosphere, it’s hard to view such an outrageous decision without prior warning as an attempt by SMC to sabotage the football club’s season at the most crucial stage.
@Alanlharris62: Matt. Can you confirm who made the decision as the email has come from the York City account and if it wasnt the clubs decision then that looks badly on you when it shouldnt. For me common sense should have applied here. The 20 people could now end up with a fine up to £1,000
@Hatters10x: Proper disgrace this is Matt, can’t believe it to be honest. Anything that can be done by yourself?
@discodenkelly: This is absolute nonsense. No judge, no jury, straight to execution without even considering a response from those involved. @YorkSMC once again showing they have zero understanding of a situation.
A lack of common sense and understanding of football fans in the banning of some of our loudest & most loyal supporters
There was no malice it was done in exuberance
I’m sure a warning letter would have ensured it wouldn’t happen again
Work together for the greater good #ycfc pic.twitter.com/9febLCv9GC
