Coming off of a breakout season, the New Orleans Saints are trying to keep Chris Olave a crucial part of the offense for the foreseeable future. However, both sides have been unable to agree to terms on a contract extension.
Olave is set to be a free agent after the 2026 campaign, meaning the Saints are running out of time. General manager Mickey Loomis still expects to get a deal done, but hasn’t put a timeline on when Olave could be signed long-term, via Katherine Terrell of ESPN.
The Saints just selected Jordyn Tyson with the eighth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Ideally, they are trying to build their passing attack around the talented receivers. Tyson is locked in by virtue of his rookie contract. But an extension will be necessary for Olave to be included in the pairing beyond 2026.
During the 2025 campaign, the Saints lead receiver set new career-highs across the board with 100 receptions for 1,163 yards and nine touchdowns. His entire four-year run in New Orleans has produced 291 grabs for 3,728 yards and 19 touchdowns.
With Kellen Moore at head coach, the franchise has an offensive mind running the show. They now believe they have found their quarterback of the future in Tyler Shough. Now, the Saints will work to build their offense around him. That was evident with their selection of Tyson.
But Tyson will still need to prove himself. Olave has already shown he has a strong connection with Shough. Furthermore, he is only 25-years-old and is hitting his peak. It’ll be pricey, but the Saints still want to sign Olave to an extension. They might just have to be a bit more eager to get a deal done.
