Most Expensive Over in IPL History: Top 5 Costly Overs

Quick Answer

The most expensive over in IPL history is 37 runs. It has happened twice. Prasanth Parameswaran conceded 37 to Chris Gayle in IPL 2011. Harshal Patel conceded 37 to Ravindra Jadeja in IPL 2021. Both are joint record-holders.

Top 5 Most Expensive Overs in IPL History

The table below includes six entries because three overs are tied at 33 runs. A true top 5 list must include all tied entries.

Parameswaran was one of Kerala’s most promising pace bowlers in 2011 and had won Player of the Match on his IPL debut. Then came the Chinnaswamy game against RCB.

Gayle — in his early RCB phase that season — faced the third over of the innings alone and hit four sixes and three fours, another brutal example from Chris Gayle’s IPL records . Parameswaran bowled a no-ball in that sequence, pushing the total to 37. The over became the joint-highest runs conceded in a single over in IPL history.

Not one ball was a dot. RCB won the match by nine wickets after Kochi Tuskers Kerala made 125/9 and RCB chased it with 128/1 in 13.1 overs.

Context makes this over even more remarkable. Harshal Patel had done brilliantly in the first three overs of his spell. He had taken three wickets and conceded just 14 runs across those overs. At the end of the 19th over, CSK were 154/4 and RCB were still in the game.

Then Jadeja happened. Ravindra Jadeja hit five sixes and a four off Harshal, with a no-ball adding the extra run to make it 37 total, showing how costly one mistake can be in the wider context of the most no-balls bowled in IPL history  CSK finished at 191/4 and went on to beat RCB by 69 runs — RCB’s first defeat of IPL 2021.

This over did not just equal a record — it changed the outcome of the match completely. Harshal later admitted he could not execute what he wanted in that over, while Jadeja was good enough to punish every error.

KKR needed 35 from 30 balls, and Cummins got them all in just one over. The Australian hit four sixes and two fours off Sams in the 16th over, with a no-ball adding the extra run to make it 35.

The scale of the hitting was stunning. Cummins ended with an unbeaten 56 off just 15 balls — the joint-fastest fifty in IPL history at the time — and KKR won with four overs to spare. Sams bowled the third-most expensive over in IPL history. He started the over with KKR needing those runs across five more overs. He gave them in one.

This is the only entry in the list where the runs were spread across two batters. Tiwary took a single off the first ball to bring Gayle on strike. Gayle launched into a brutal attack — four consecutive sixes — and then Bopara sent down seven runs in wides to push the over total to 33.

This over is unique because seven of its 33 runs came from wides — pure bowling errors under pressure. KKR scored 200, but still lost the match by eight wickets. Mahela Jayawardene scored a century for Kings XI Punjab in the chase.

This over stands apart because of the context. It came in a playoff match at Wankhede, a venue with several major entries in Wankhede Stadium IPL records  CSK were chasing 227 after Virender Sehwag’s century powered Kings XI Punjab to 226/6.

Raina was in a different dimension. He hit 33 off Awana’s over in a sequence of 6, 6, 4, 4, 4nb, 4, 4. He reached his fifty in 16 balls. By the end of six powerplay overs, CSK had scored 100/2, with Raina already 87 off 25 balls.

It remains one of the greatest powerplay batting performances in IPL history — and it still ended in defeat. Raina was run out for 87 off 25 balls. CSK lost by 24 runs.

Most Expensive 4-Over Spell in IPL History

This is a completely different record from the most expensive over. A single over record measures the costliest six legal deliveries in one over. A four-over spell measures the total runs conceded by a bowler across their entire bowling quota in a match — up to 24 legal deliveries.

These are the five most expensive four-over spells in IPL history:

Three of the five most expensive spells in IPL history came in IPL 2025. That tells you how much T20 batting and IPL scoring rates have escalated in recent years.

Jofra Archer set the record when SRH batters took him apart in Hyderabad. He leaked 76 runs without taking a wicket for Rajasthan Royals against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
