The NCAA has announced that the Division I men’s and women’s tournaments will
expand to 76 teams
starting in 2027.
The men’s and women’s NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament tournaments will increase from 68 teams to 76 teams, a move that creates more opportunities for student-athletes and raises the stakes for college basketball fans.
The easiest way to describe the change is that the First Four will transition into a larger opening round. Instead of four games in the First Four, six games will be played over two days.
This deliberate change allows the field to remain at 64 teams during the first round of the tournament, keeping the classic first-round rhythm with 32 games being played across two days.
The change has been discussed within the NCAA for years, but officials have now figured out how to allow more teams access to the tournament without significantly altering the schedule fans have grown accustomed to over the years.
This new format change will mainly affect power conferences, particularly teams hovering around .500 that are not as strong in conference play.
For example, men’s basketball teams like Auburn and Indiana, who were on the cusp of making the NCAA tournament this past year, would have likely made the tournament under the new rule change.
“Expanding the Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships is the right decision for the student-athletes and programs that will now have access to the greatest events in college sports,” Board of Directors Chair Tim Sands, president at Virginia Tech said. “As NCAA leaders, we are especially excited to provide additional, highly competitive games for fans who look forward to March Madness every year.”
