“Need To Add Numbers There” Packers’ Brian Gutekunst Doesn’t Shy Away From Biggest NFL Draft Need

Despite not having a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers still have some big needs to fill.

Ahead of the draft getting underway on Thursday night, Gutekunst made no bones about Green Bay’s need to add quality depth at cornerback, especially ahead of new coordinator Jonathan Gannon taking over the defense.

“Some of our young guys, I’m interested to see with our new coaching staff how they adapt to what we’re going to ask them to do,” Gutekunst told reporters during his pre-draft press conference. “But we do need to add some numbers there.”

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, left, and general manager Brian Gutekunst are shown during a joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, August 21, 2025 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Fortunately for Green Bay, cornerback is one of the deeper position groups in an otherwise viewed to be mediocre class.

Even after signing free agent Benjamin St.-Juste in free agency, the Packers still lack quality depth at what could prove to be a pivotal position.

After revamping the front seven by trading for Zaire Franklin this offseason, Gutekunst and Green Bay may turn to the draft to upgrade the secondary over the course of the draft weekend ahead.
