NHL Rumors: Jonathan Toews, Edmonton Oilers, and the Toronto Maple Leafs

Jonathan Toews is considering retirement

TSN: Darren Dreger was told by a source that 28-year-old Winnipeg Jets forward Jonathan Toews is considering retiring, that it’s more likely than not that he retires. His leadership in the room and on the ice was an asset for the Jets last season, but 82 games is a lot.

“He does not go out the way that he was hoping or the organization had intended by missing the postseason. So we’ll let him formally announce, but that’s definitely the way that he’s leaning heavily today.”

Areas of need for the Edmonton Oilers and a couple of potential targets

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period: Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman is looking for a scoring winger with speed to play with Connor McDavid. The Oilers need to address their goaltending, defense corps, a third-line center and two bottom-six forwards.

Expectations are going up for the Montreal Canadiens

Jeff Marek said that St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou could be a target for the Oilers, others have mentioned Philadelphia Flyers forward Owen Tippett.

The Oilers can add to their $15 to $18 million in projected cap space if they move Darnell Nurse and his contract. The defenseman does have a no-movement clause.

Some Toronto Maple Leafs who could be moved this offseason

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period: Although his name has come up on the rumor mill for the past couple of seasons, there hasn’t been the sense of possible deal like there is this offseason. Talk has linked Rielly to the San Jose Sharks and Edmonton Oilers.

The Maple Leafs haven’t approached Rielly at any point about waiting no-movement clause. If the Leafs hold some trade talks that they deal close, then they’ll approach Rielly and his camp.

The Leafs will also have some decisions in net, and one of Joseph Woll, Anthony Stolarz and Dennis Hildeby could be moved.

Defenseman Brandon Carlo will be in the rumor mill again. It’s possible that they don’t qualify RFA forward Mattias Maccelli. Pending UFA forward Calle Jarnkrok isn’t expected back. They had some preliminary talks with pending UFA defenseman Troy Stecher.
