The Denver Nuggets kept their season alive, but Game 5 did not erase the concern around this series. Their 125 to 113 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves gave them another game, while Minnesota’s mistakes made the result look cleaner than it should have.
Nikola Jokic gave Denver the response it needed
Nikola Jokic did what Denver needed from its best player. He finished with 27 points, 16 assists, and 12 rebounds, and he controlled the game without forcing the Nuggets into panic possessions.
That matters because Denver had no room left. A 3 to 1 deficit turns every mistake into a season-ending threat, and Jokic gave the Nuggets the calm they lacked in Minnesota.
His passing opened the floor. His scoring punished Rudy Gobert enough to make Minnesota defend every action honestly.
The Nuggets are always dangerous when Jokic scores and organizes at the same time. Game 5 gave them that version again, and it kept their comeback alive.
Denver’s role players finally gave Jokic help
The bigger development was the support around him. Spencer Jones scored 20 points for Denver, hit four threes, and gave the Nuggets the kind of role-player punch they needed with Aaron Gordon unavailable.
That production changed the feel of the game. It gave Denver another scoring outlet and helped turn Minnesota’s defensive pressure into rotation stress.
Jokic praised Jones after the game for staying ready through uneven minutes. That is exactly the kind of contribution Denver needs when the series becomes more physical and less predictable.
The concern is location. Role players often look different at home, and Denver now has to prove that support can travel to Minneapolis.
Minnesota’s turnovers made Denver’s night easier
The most important number from Game 5 was Minnesota’s turnover count. The Timberwolves committed 25 turnovers in the loss, and Denver turned those giveaways into 35 points.
That is the real warning for the Nuggets. Minnesota still shot well enough to make the game uncomfortable despite handing Denver transition chances all night.
The Timberwolves shot 50 percent from the field and 42 percent from three. They also got 48 bench points, which explains why Tracy McGrady left the game nervous for Denver even after a double-digit Nuggets win.
Jaden McDaniels called the turnovers silly and said Minnesota played too fast. He also said cutting down 10 of them could have changed the result, and that point is hard to dismiss.
Minnesota still has a spacing problem without Edwards and DiVincenzo
The Timberwolves are dealing with a real personnel issue. Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo are both out after suffering leg injuries in Game 4, and that changes how Denver can defend the floor.
McDaniels described their absence through gravity. Defenders cannot help off Edwards or DiVincenzo the same way, which opens driving lanes and keeps the ball moving.
Without them, Minnesota had moments of stagnation. Denver packed the paint more often, loaded up on drives, and turned rushed decisions into live-ball mistakes.
The Wolves still produced enough offense to scare Denver. That is the uncomfortable part for the Nuggets before Game 6.
Game 6 will tell the truth about Denver
Denver has history in this spot. The Nuggets came back from 3 to 1 deficits twice in the 2020 postseason, which gives this group a real reference point.
History does not solve the current problem. Denver is 0 to 2 in Minnesota in this series and scored 96 points in both road games.
That is why Game 5 should be viewed as a survival response rather than proof of control. Jokic was excellent, Jones gave them a lift, and the Nuggets played with better force.
The next game will be harsher. Minnesota will clean up the ball, the crowd will feed its role players, and Denver’s bench has to show the same nerve away from home.
The Nuggets are still alive because Jokic steadied them and Minnesota gave away too many possessions. Game 6 will show whether Denver found a real answer or simply caught the Timberwolves on the wrong night.
