Markus Burton, a 6-foot guard who played the last three seasons at Notre Dame, committed to IU basketball today out of the transfer portal.
Burton also considered the University of Houston. He is the third transfer portal commitment of the day for the Hoosiers, joining Jaeden Mustaf (Georgia Tech) and Darren Harris (Duke).
If he is granted a medical redshirt for the 2025-26 season, in which he only played in 10 games, Burton has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
A native of Mishawaka, Indiana, who played at Penn and was the 2023 Indiana Mr. Basketball, Burton started 68 of the 69 games he played in for the Fighting Irish under Micah Shrewsberry.
He holds career averages of 19.1 points, 3.8 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 33.2 minutes per game. His career shooting percentage is 43.8 overall, 33.2 percent on 3-pointers and 84.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Burton will slot in as Indiana’s starting point guard, providing what should be a significant upgrade statistically over Tayton Conerway and Conor Enright.
The highly coveted transfer made an immediate impact upon his arrival in South Bend and the IU coaching staff hopes he’ll do the same as a Hoosier.
In his first season at Notre Dame, the 2023-24 season, he was the ACC Rookie of the Year and a third-team All-ACC selection after averaging 17.5 points. His scoring average ranked third in the nation among freshmen. He also ranked second in the ACC with an assist rate of 37.6 percent and had the highest usage rate in the conference.
Burton was a preseason All-ACC selection as a sophomore in the 2024-25 campaign and delivered a solid season, averaging 21.3 points per game overall and 23.5 points in ACC games, which led the conference. He took on more of a scoring role in his second season as his assist rate dipped to 20.4 in league play.
In the 2025-26 season, Burton’s impact was limited by an injury. He suffered a broken left ankle and underwent season-ending surgery in December.
He was a preseason All-ACC selection and was on watch lists for the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award and the Bob Cousy Award. He played in only 10 games and averaged 18.5 points, 3.7 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.6 steals in 30.1 minutes. Burton shot 49.9 percent from the floor and 30.6 percent on 3s as a junior.

Burton scouting report
“Burton is a small-but-lethal lead guard scorer who excels at creating his own shot. His junior season was cut short by injury after just 10 games, but as a sophomore, he averaged 23.5 PPG in ACC play on 44.5 percent shooting from the field (40.2 percent from deep) en route to a second team All-ACC slot. He’s outstanding in both pick-and-roll (87th percentile in efficiency as a scorer, per Synergy) and isolation (90th percentile).
“He is especially effective off the bounce, cashing in on pull-ups at excellent rates for two straight years. In ball screens, his numbers dip noticeably when opponents force him to be a passer, but that could say more about his Notre Dame teammates, as he does show some impressive reads. At his smaller stature, he can really struggle if the defense hedges hard with length. Burton’s size makes him a target defensively at times. He plays hard and has solid instincts, and he actually grades out well via defensive analytics (97th percentile in DRAPM, per CBB Analytics). But opponents can go at him in targeted mismatches or via switches.” – The Athletic
