NT ESPORTS FOUNDER NICK TURNER EXPLORES KENYA’S GROWING ESPORTS ECOSYSTEM – Esports Africa News

A Global Esports Voice Visits Kenya

Esports Africa News caught up with Nik Turner, Founder and Managing Director of NT Esports, during his recent visit to Kenya. The UK-based consultancy specializes in esports education, grassroots development, and industry advisory.

Nik shared his excitement about being in Nairobi, describing the experience as unforgettable. From the welcoming community to the vibrant culture, he noted that Kenya left a lasting impression and is a destination he looks forward to revisiting.

Partnering with CZ Esports in Nairobi

During his visit, Nik collaborated with CZ Esports at an event hosted at NIBS Technical College. He described the partnership as both insightful and rewarding, highlighting the unique growth stage of esports in Kenya compared to more established regions like the UK and the United States.

According to him, Africa’s esports ecosystem is still developing, making it an exciting space to contribute, learn, and support grassroots initiatives.

Esports in the UK vs Kenya: A Development Gap

Nik explained that esports in the UK has seen rapid growth over the past decade, largely driven by education. With thousands of students studying esports courses and universities offering specialized degrees, the industry has expanded into a fully recognized sector.

In contrast, Kenya is currently at the awareness stage, where events and activations are helping introduce esports to new audiences. He emphasized that initiatives like local tournaments and school engagements are crucial in building that foundation.

The Rise of Esports Education

A key driver of NT Esports’ success has been its focus on education. Nik highlighted how esports programs in schools and colleges are designed not just around gaming, but around transferable skills such as teamwork, data analysis, and digital literacy.

He also noted that esports education is gradually expanding to younger age groups, preparing the next generation for careers within and beyond gaming.

Career Opportunities in Esports

Nik addressed a common misconception that becoming a professional player is the only path in esports. He stressed that only a small percentage of gamers reach the pro level, making it essential for players to explore alternative career paths.

From coaching and content creation to marketing, event management, and broadcasting, esports offers a wide range of opportunities for those passionate about the industry.

Building Sustainable Esports Teams in Africa

On the topic of sustainability, Nik emphasized the importance of strong business strategy for esports organizations. He explained that grassroots teams must focus on survival first managing expenses, developing talent, and building visibility before scaling operations.

He encouraged teams to adopt smart recruitment, leverage community-driven content creation, and attract sponsorships through consistent growth and exposure. Importantly, he highlighted mentorship and financial discipline as key factors in long-term success.

A Promising Future for African Esports

Nik concluded by expressing optimism about the future of esports in Kenya and across Africa. While the journey is still in its early stages, he believes the potential is undeniable.

With increasing awareness, strategic partnerships, and investment in education, Africa is well-positioned to become a major player in the global esports ecosystem.
