‘Official multiplayer’ mode coming to BeamNG.drive
  • BeamNG.drive has an “official multiplayer’ mode in the works
  • Multiplayer will gradually roll out after the upcoming V0.39 update

The BeamNG.drive development team has revealed that multiplayer will be coming to the game beyond its next V0.39 update.

Fresh off the shock announcement that PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro versions are being developed and will be released later this year, the studio has confirmed that players will be able to race against – and crash into – each other online in a future update.

The game currently has multiplayer mods that enable online play, but their stability and the latency some players experience make them a less-than-polished prospect for most.

“Development on multiplayer has been underway for several years now, but is still far from what we’d call ready and likely won’t be for quite a while,” read an official statement.

“And when it does land, it won’t arrive as a final, polished package. It’ll follow the same approach we’re taking with tyre physics: ship an initial implementation as soon as it’s ready, then gradually improve it based on your feedback.”

This suggests that multiplayer will be introduced into BeamNG gradually, with player feedback helping shape its development as a console release nears fruition.

Regardless, this is a hugely exciting development for the game, which, thanks to its combination of superlative crash and driving physics, will surely make it an incredibly popular multiplayer experience.
