One of the finest players in the English set-up, Johnny Baristow, has been recently dropped from England’s white ball squad, which includes both ODI and T20 formats. Johnny Baristow was one of the prominent members of the English team that won the ODI World Cup in 2019;
however, since then Johnny has not been able to perform as per the expectation, which resulted in his axe from the squad. However, England’s chief selector, Luke Wright, gave a massive update regarding Johnny’s white-ball future. Luke feels that the 34-year-old batter can still make a comeback in the English white ball setup in spite of getting dropped.
Along with Johnny Baristow, England have also dropped Moeen Ali and veteran pacer Chris Jordan. In place of the trio, five uncapped players have been picked for the 3 T-20 and 5 ODIs, which are set to take place from September 11 to September 29.
Luke Wright stated, “One of Jonny’s best qualities is his strong desire to play,” Wright mentioned.
“Our goal is to help him return to being one of the top players in the world. He suffered a terrible injury, and our main focus has been on this: Can we help him recover to his level before the injury?” He knows this and doesn’t enjoy it. But Jonny is determined to recover, and I hope he does and manages to rejoin the team.”
Apart from the changes in the team, there are changes in England’s coaching set-up, as well as Matthew Mott being removed as England’s white ball coach after England’s lackluster performance in both the ODI and T20 World Cup. Marcus Trescothick has taken the charge on an interim basis. The new faces in the English set-up include left-arm pace bowler Josh Hull and Jacob Bathel John Turner, who are picked in both ODI and T20, followed by Jordan Cox and Dan Mousley in the T-20 format.
“Now seems like the perfect moment to add a few more selections and focus on building for the future,” Wright continued.
“This isn’t a trial. These players are top-level cricketers. One thing we definitely have in England is a lot of talent.” With our schedule, it allows us to consider a broader range of players and gives us the chance to look at some of the younger players who might not usually get this chance.”
Apart from this, Jos Buttler is all set to lead England’s white ball squad against Australia in spite of the calf injury; however, he might be relieved of his keeping duties to find his form at the top order.
