Packers May Be Scrapping Developmental Plan With Rising Young Player

The Packers may be in the midst of a reset in the front-seven.

With new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s arrival, the Packers seem to be building the talent around his philosophies and schemes, which could be bad news for young linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper.

Packers may be primed to bury Ty’Ron Hopper on the depth chart

Green Bay Packers linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper (59) prepares to run through a drill during the second day of training camp on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Ray Nitschke Field in Ashwaubenon, Wis.

Over at Packers on SI, veteran reporter Bill Huber listed some of the biggest winners and losers from the Packers’ draft class and offseason, which included the arrival of veteran linebacker Zaire Franklin, with Hopper making the list of the players who lost the most.

“The Packers define themselves as a draft-and-develop organization,” Huber points out for SI. “Typically, a player like Hopper, who was drafted in the third round in 2024, would be developed to eventually replace Quay Walker.

“However, after Walker signed with the Raiders in free agency, the Packers traded for Zaire Franklin. A 3-4 defense requires only two off-the-ball linebackers, with Edgerrin Cooper and Franklin manning those positions. While there might be packages to get Hopper on the field, he’s going to have to make his mark on special teams.”

The totality of the Packers’ moves this offseason, could leave Hopper relegated to a diminished role in the year ahead, and he may need a strong showing during the spring and training camp this summer to impress Gannon enough to put him on the field consistently.
