It’s hard to be surprised by horror games these days, but the makers of Umurangi Generation might be about to shock all of us with Penguin Colony, a Lovecraftian adventure starring sea birds with a Steam Next Fest demo you can download right now.
Origame Digital is once again using a retro-inspired (but uniquely stylish) look for this off-beat adventure, which is sporting a dense atmosphere worthy of At the Mountains of Madness “and other stories” that it’s loosely adapting. Fellow Traveller (Citizen Sleeper series, Titanium Court) is publishing.
“The year is 1939, and the Nazis and Kaitiaki are making their way into the deep Antarctic to answer the call of an impossibly ancient being. One group seeks to extract this inconceivable power for its own destructive means. The other, as it has been doing for generations, hopes to return it to its slumber for another hundred years.”
The full nature of the gameplay is unclear at the time of writing, but these penguins are following the humans as they “collapse under the strain” and find things that shouldn’t be found. At the very least, it should be a really unique “walking sim” unlike anything we’ve experienced before.
Penguin Colony hasn’t unearthed a release date yet, but we know it’s currently targeting a 2026 launch on Steam. For now, you can download and play its Steam Next Fest demo right here.
