Pierre McGuire uses Pittsburgh as example of why Leafs can rebound next season: Leafs Morning Take
Pittsburgh forced a Game 6 and Shea Theodore was the OT hero as Vegas outlasted Utah 5-4 to tie that series at two games apiece.
As we’ve been doing lately, we kicked off the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take with a look around the Stanley Cup Playoffs Naturally, with the Vegas Golden Knights in action, a Super Chat rolled in calling for Rosie to apologize to Mitch Marner and his family. The former Leaf, now centring Vegas’ third line and running the second power-play unit, picked up a nice assist in their win. He now has three points through four games in the series. It’s still a bit early to be victory lapping four games into Round 1—but here we are.
SPOILER: Rosie did not apologize. Instead, he called it like it is, as per usual.
It appears Toronto’s GM search has hit a holding pattern as the Maple Leafs wait on a decision from Mats Sundin, who’s reportedly back home in Sweden mulling things over. From what several connected people are reporting, this would be a significant role—and it’s not connected to Mike Gillis whatsoever. With that in mind, we dug into the idea of Sundin stepping into such an influential position at a critical time for the organization, especially considering he doesn’t have prior front office experience.
After that, Pierre McGuire stopped by to offer insight on the Leafs’ front office outlook, stressing the importance of clearly defined roles as the GM search continues. He weighed in on the possibility of Mats Sundin taking on a prominent position, noting the job’s demanding nature, while also sharing what he’s heard about finalists John Chayka and Scott White. McGuire also highlighted the significance of the upcoming NHL Draft Lottery—calling it a strong class and emphasizing the need to address the blue line—before adding that a bounce-back season is well within reach behind stars like Auston Matthews and William Nylander.
David Pagnotta will be in for Jay Rosehill on the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. We’ll recap the three games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and address the latest news on the GM search. Plus. Andy Strickland of the Cam & Strick podcast will drop by the show once again.
