Pitching carries Blue Jays to 3-0 victory over Red Sox

That’s more like it.

On Tuesday evening, the Toronto Blue Jays took the second of three against the Boston Red Sox, evening up the series at one each. Let’s take a look at what went on in the Blue Jays’ 3-0 victory!
Trey Yesavage made his season debut. He failed to strike out a batter in his first three innings, but got in and out of trouble. That allowed the Blue Jays to take the lead in the bottom of the third. Andrés Giménez hit a lead-off single, and was moved to third thanks to a two-out double by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Next up was Kazuma Okamoto, who drove in both runners thanks to an RBI single, being thrown out at second.

Yesavage took over from there, striking out two of the four batters he faced in the top of the fourth. In the fifth, he got Marcelo Mayer to fly out, Caleb Durbin to pop up, and Jarren Duran to line out. The Jays added a third run in the bottom of the fifth, as Myles Straw and Ernie Clement drew back-to-back walks. Guerrero Jr. hit a single to drive in the third run of the game.

In the top of the sixth, Yesavage struck out Willson Contreras and was yanked from the game. The Blue Jays shut it down, with the lone Red Sox base runner coming from a walk issued by Mason Fluharty.

Takeaways…

Trey Yesavage didn’t look incredibly sharp through the first three innings, but he started to look like himself after striking out two Red Sox. Overall, he finished with a line of 5.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. With runners on the corners and two outs in the top of the second, Yesavage generated a fly out from Caleb Durbin.

It was a great game from the Blue Jays’ bullpen. First up was Mason Fluharty, who walked a batter but got two outs in the sixth. Jeff Hoffman had his second good outing in a row, striking out two in a clean inning. Tyler Rogers’ ERA dropped to 0.59 thanks to a clean inning with a strikeout.

Louis Varland has to be the team’s permanent closer. He faced the middle of the order in the top of the ninth, striking out Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, and Trevor Story. What a trade it’s turned out to be.

It was a fairly pedestrian game offensively by the Blue Jays. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was the team’s best hitter, going 2-3 with his seventh double of the season. He was also hit by a pitch, but stayed in the game.

Kazuma Okamoto had the team’s biggest hit, driving in two runs in the bottom of the third. The two-RBI single came off the bat at 105.1 mph. Good stuff from the Blue Jays’ third baseman.

Daulton Varsho had a tough game, striking out three times but notching a single in his final plate appearance. Andrés Giménez and Myles Straw also had hits, with Giménez coming in to score the game-winning run. Straw also made a terrific catch in the fifth.
