Indian triple jumpers Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker faced a disappointing outcome in the men’s triple jump qualification round at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Both athletes were unable to meet the qualification standard of 17.10 meters, finishing outside the top 12 needed to advance to the finals.
Qualification Attempts
The qualification round saw both Chithravel and Aboobacker struggle to find their rhythm. In their first attempts, both athletes recorded a jump of 15.99 meters, leaving them far from the required standard of 17.10m. As the competition progressed, they had two more attempts to improve their distances.
In the second round, Aboobacker managed to slightly increase his jump to 16.19 meters, while Chithravel improved to 16.25 meters. Despite these efforts, both were still well below the qualification standard, putting immense pressure on their final attempts to secure a spot in the finals.
Final Attempts and Results
In their final attempts, Aboobacker delivered a commendable jump of 16.49 meters, his best of the day. However, it was not enough to qualify, as he finished in 21st place overall. Chithravel, on the other hand, recorded a jump of 16.21 meters in his last attempt, concluding his performance with a best jump of 16.25 meters, which placed him 27th in the qualification standings.
The disappointment was palpable as both athletes fell short of their personal bests and the qualification mark. The top 12 jumpers advanced to the finals, leaving Chithravel and Aboobacker to reflect on what could have been.
A Lesson Learned
Both athletes have shown great potential in their careers leading up to the Olympics, but the pressure of the Olympic stage can be overwhelming. The qualifications for the men’s triple jump were highly competitive, and the standard set at 17.10 meters proved to be a significant hurdle for the Indian duo.
Despite the setback, the experience gained from competing at such a prestigious event will be invaluable for their future endeavours. As they look ahead, both Chithravel and Aboobacker will aim to refine their techniques and improve their performances in upcoming competitions.
