Tonight’s UFC Winnipeg event was headlined by a welterweight bout featuring former title challenger Gilbert Burns taking on Mike Malott.
Burns (22-10 MMA) had entered this evening’s main event with hopes of snapping a four-fight losing skid. ‘Durinho’ had most previously competed inside of the Octagon eleven months ago, where he suffered a first-round TKO loss to rising contender Michael Morales (see that here). The 39-year-old was looking to earn his first win since defeating Jorge Masvidal by way of decision at UFC 287.
Meanwhile, Mike Malott (14-2-1 MMA) had come into tonight’s headliner sporting a three-fight winning streak, with his most previous victory being a decision win over Kevin Holland this past October in Vancouver. Prior to that triumph, ‘Proper’ had earned a TKO victory over Charles Radtke.
Tonight’s UFC Winnipeg main event proved to be a coming out party of Canadian Mike Malott. The home country favorite was able to get the better of Gilbert Burns for the majority of the opening two rounds, this before ultimately dropping ‘Durinho’ with a big combination in round three. From there, ‘Proper’ utilized some heavy ground and pound to put Burns away for good. Following the contest, Burns announced his retirement from the sport.

Malott scores the third round TKO over Burns
A very poised and patient performance. Mitigated risk when necessary and put his foot on the gas when he sensed an opening.

Sad to see Gilbert Burns call it a career.
He has been an absolute gentleman and has inspired so many younger fighters.
This sport is better off because of fighters like him.
