Georgetown junior guard Malik Mack has committed to Providence, per On3’s Joe Tipton and multiple reports. The 6-2, 175-pound scoring guard entered the portal on March 31st after two seasons as a Hoya under Ed Cooley. Mack brings proven Big East experience, elite playmaking and a high-floor profile to Bryan Hodgson’s backcourt.
Mack is a high usage lead guard who creates for others. In 2025-26 he posted an 86th-percentile ORAPM of +2.21, a 25.3% usage rate and a 92nd-percentile assist rate of 25.9%, all while keeping turnovers at a solid 15.2% TO rate (55th percentile). Shooting efficiency was the main knock: 50.6% true shooting (27th percentile) on the season. He went 45.4% on twos — including just 51.5% at the rim — and 29.8% from 3 with a high 46.5% three-point rate. On the bright side of the shooting resume, Mack shot 81.8% at the free throw line (81st percentile) and solid mid-range touch at 40.0%. Defensively, he profiles as a quality on-ball stopper with a 77th-percentile DRAPM of -1.06, showing he can hold his own individually even if team defensive rating lagged.
After dominating at Harvard (29.3% usage, 106.5 ORtg), his usage dipped slightly at Georgetown but his RAPM jumped from negative to strongly positive which was a good sign he could handle Big East physicality. In a spacing-friendly system like Providence’s, Mack’s elite playmaking and defensive competence could shine even brighter if he bumps true shooting closer to 55% which feels doable given he likely wont be asked to be a primary scorer with all the other weapons Hodgson and staff have assembled already in the portal.
Digging into the shooting numbers a little more on Mack, his mid-range game is something he’ll likely be asked to move away and the interesting thing about the 3-point shooting is that the volume was roughly the same from his sophomore year to junior year while the hit rate dipped from 35.3% to 29.8%. Something I could see being a point of emphasis for Hodgson and staff when pitching their development plan to Mack was to show him how many medium to low quality shots he was taking at Georgetown. He took a much better percentage of high quality shots his freshman year at Georgetown when he shot 34.1% from 3-point range, so it seems reasonable that Mack could be asked to score less in mid-range and get better, more quality looks from 3 to get back to the 34-35% range as a shooter. His playmaking should also be helped by the level of scorers around him at Providence as compared to the two seasons on the Hilltop.
I’d expect this to be the last big name transfer to be added by the Friars with the budget getting tight, but keep an eye on more international additions and maybe even a high school player or two to fill out the roster which now sits at 10 players.

OFFENSIVE ROLE & IMPACT
Mack functions as a high-usage primary ball-handler with a solid 86th percentile ORAPM of 2.2092 that underscores his positive offensive influence, complemented by a 25.3% usage rate. However, his 107.5 ORtg in the 45th percentile and 50.6% true shooting percentage in the 27th percentile highlight efficiency limitations within Georgetown’s system. This profile marks him as a creator who elevates team offense but requires better finishing to maximize impact.
SHOT PROFILE & PLAYMAKING
Mack’s shooting shows balance with strengths in free throws at 81.8% (81st percentile) and mid-range at 40.0% (46th percentile), but lags at the rim (51.49%, 29th percentile) and overall twos (45.4%, 25th percentile) while hitting 29.8% from three (35th percentile) on a solid 46.5% three-point rate (58th percentile). His playmaking stands out via a 92nd percentile assist rate of 25.9%, paired with respectable ball security at 15.15% turnover rate (55th percentile). This combination positions him as a creator who generates opportunities effectively despite finishing inconsistencies.
DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTION
Mack profiles as a quality on-ball defender with a 77th percentile DRAPM of -1.0638, indicating he allows fewer points than most players at his position. His adjusted defensive rating of 112.1 ranks in the 28th percentile, reflecting some struggles in team context, but he contributes peripherally with a 43rd percentile steal rate of 1.3% and 31st percentile defensive rebounding rate of 8.6%. Overall, his metrics suggest individual defensive competence with room for scheme fit.
ADVANCED METRICS
Mack’s advanced metrics highlight a Very Good tier RAPM (3.273, 87th percentile) driven by balanced contributions on both ends. His PORPAG of 2.5 in the 79th percentile signals strong overall productivity, while his BPM of 1.57 reflects above-average value despite shooting hurdles. This package positions him as a high-floor rotational piece with tangible impact.
CAREER PROGRESSION
Mack exploded as Harvard’s Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2023-24 with 29.3% usage and 106.5 ORtg, earning a transfer to Georgetown amid high expectations. At Georgetown in 2025, his usage dipped to 22.8% with ORtg falling to 100.9, but RAPM improved markedly from -0.368 to 1.982, showing adaptation to Big East physicality. His current PORPAG of 2.5 indicates sustained productivity as a junior entering the portal.
PROVIDENCE FIT
Mack’s profile aligns well with the Hodgson system at a 70.3 overall fit score, excelling in usage compatibility (85) and playmaking fit (80) to thrive as a ball-handling creator. His shooting gravity (55) presents a moderate concern, but defensive scheme fit (58) supports on-ball versatility. Closest archetype: Floor General.
BOTTOM LINE
Mack projects as a high-major rotational PG with portal interest from mid-to-upper Big East or ACC programs due to elite playmaking and defensive upside. His ceiling is a full-time starter if shooting efficiency climbs to 55% TS in a spacing-friendly system.
