D-Von Dudley is basically telling Tony Khan to pick up the phone because he thinks Tommy Dreamer could be a serious weapon for AEW behind the scenes.
While speaking on the DukeLoves Rasslin podcast, D-Von was asked if Dreamer is someone promotions should consider hiring as a booker after his TNA exit, and he did not dance around it. He said AEW could use experienced people who actually know how to help a wrestling product grow.
“Absolutely. You know, like I said before, I remember, you know, we mentioned AEW where, you know, to have guys that basically know what they’re doing that can help the product really grow. And I think, you know, if Tony Khan is listening, Tommy Dreamer is definitely somebody that can be used in that aspect.”
Then D-Von Dudley went even bigger with the praise, comparing Dreamer’s potential backstage role to the kind of trusted creative voices WWE once had in Michael Hayes and Pat Patterson.
“He could be your Michael Hayes or your Pat Patterson, things like that, because Tommy’s very, very good. Again, I’m telling you, he has a great mind for this business.”
That is a pretty strong endorsement, especially with Dreamer’s TNA departure still being picked apart. Dreamer recently said on Busted Open that he tried to build a culture in TNA, but that job is not his anymore, and he warned people will realize how much things change now that he is gone.
“It’s my job to get you where you wanna go and if another company doesn’t want you, then it’s my job to keep this place going — it’s not my job anymore — I tried building a culture and I can’t worry about that anymore, because it is all gonna change, and I hope everyone realizes how much it’s gonna change.”
False Finish later reported a very different version from sources inside TNA, claiming Dreamer’s comments were not accurate and that he had control over who got pushed.
“Sources inside TNA indicate to False Finish that Tommy Dreamer’s statements are not accurate. Dreamer did not want to build contenders and in fact had control of who got pushed.”
Those same sources also claimed the feeling inside TNA was that the creative direction needed to improve, especially with the company moving toward a bigger platform on AMC.
“The belief is that the culture will change for the better. The feeling is that the booking and creative wasn’t good and change was needed, especially with the bigger platform of AMC this year.”
So, Dreamer may be out of TNA, but his name is not exactly cooling off. Some in TNA may believe the company needed a change, but D-Von is clearly making the case that Dreamer still belongs in a creative room somewhere, and AEW is the place he has in mind.
Now the ball would be in Tony Khan’s court, assuming he is even interested. Dreamer has years of experience, plenty of locker room credibility, and at least one Hall of Fame-level friend loudly vouching for him. Whether AEW bites is another story, but D-Von just made the pitch pretty clear.
What do you think about D-Von Dudley saying AEW should use Tommy Dreamer creatively? Would Dreamer help AEW, or should Tony Khan stay far away from TNA’s backstage fallout? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
