Thomas was a four-star recruit in the class of 2022 who signed with Oklahoma out of Florida. He didn’t play much as a freshman, registering seven total tackles, one tackle for loss and 0.5 sacks. Thomas did a little more in 2023, as he had nine tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. The 2024 season was great for Thomas, as he showed his potential with 12.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks. His play helped the Sooners win nine games. In 10 games played during the 2025 season, Thomas registered 9.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Despite missing time, he helped Oklahoma make the CFP.
R Mason Thomas Strengths
Thomas has great burst and quickness at the snap that sets him up extremely well for most plays. His reaction time is great and his first few steps can help him put offensive tackles in recovery mode. That quick burst turns into good momentum and speed which can be hard for offensive tackles to match up with. He starts plays off so well.
He is a menace at getting around the edge. His first step quickness helps in this regard, but he has the speed to get around the edge too. Thomas has good flexibility to pair with that speed, which helps him get around the edge and to the quarterback. If he can add some more counters, he can really get offensive tackles off balance and then get to the inside because of his ability to consistently win by getting around the edge.
His effort and ability to play hard pop on tape. When his initial rush gets stalled, Thomas keeps working his way towards the quarterback and picks up secondary effort sacks. His burst makes it tough to block him for long periods of time, especially when the pocket collapses. He also shows good pursuit as a run defender, whether that is chasing ball carriers downfield or from across the formation.
R Mason Thomas Weaknesses
Thomas is undersized for an edge rusher. He measured in at 6-foot-2 and 241 pounds at the NFL Combine, which is below the position average at the next level. Thomas also had arms that measured in at under 32 inches, which puts him at a disadvantage against NFL tackles. He can sometimes struggle to shed because of his lack of length. Thomas might be a better fit for a 3-4, where he can play outside linebacker, rather than a 4-3 defensive end.
His run defense is behind his pass rush. He can struggle to set the edge against the run and hold his spot. His length makes it hard for him to shed. Thomas can be effective with his ability to attack gaps and pursue the ball, but holding his spot and shedding is something he will need to work on.
He had a few injuries in college that forced him to miss time. Thomas suffered a quad injury in 2025, which forced him to miss the end of the regular season. He also had injuries earlier in his career that forced him to miss time. Teams will want to make sure there are no lingering issues and that he can be durable at the next level.
