Trey Yesavage and José Berríos set to make rehab starts this week

Blue Jays News: Trey Yesavage and José Berríos set to make rehab starts this week

The reinforcements are coming, the reinforcements are coming.

Shortly before Tuesday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider noted that both Trey Yesavage and José Berríos will make rehab starts this week.
Yesavage will pitch for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Wednesday as they are in Rochester. After two starts at the Single-A level, Yesavage is expected to go about four innings with around 70 pitches thrown. There’s a realistic possibility that Yesavage could be with the big league team in the next week or two.

As for Berríos, the veteran right-handed pitcher will start for the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays on Thursday, as they host the Clearwater Threshers for six games. Like Yesavage, there’s an inning and pitch goal in mind, as Berríos is expected to throw 50 pitches and/or go three innings.

José Berríos will make a rehab start with Single-A Dunedin on Thursday, aiming for three innings and 50 pitches.

That’s big news. He’s essentially one (or two) starts behind Yesavage and is now on track to return to the #BlueJays within the next few weeks if all goes well.

This is desperately needed news for the Blue Jays. Coming into the 2026 season, the Jays had a boat load of starters, eight to be exact. But Shane Bieber was reported to have forearm soreness, and even recently landed on the 60-day injured list, while they lost Yesavage and Berríos during Spring Training.

With their rotation down to five, Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, and Eric Lauer broke records in the Blue Jays’ first series, a sweep of the Athletics. Cody Ponce looked terrific in his debut, generating a game-high 16 whiffs, but injured his knee in the third inning and is likely out for the remainder of the season.

The Blue Jays have had no other injuries to their rotation. Well, none that required the injured list, as Eric Lauer has been sick in his two most recent starts and Max Scherzer departed his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to right forearm tendinitis. That said, the injury bug has impacted their offence.

It started with the series opener against the Chicago White Sox, as Alejandro Kirk fractured his left thumb off a foul ball that came straight back. In that same series, Addison Barger lunged for the bases and hurt both ankles, landing on the IL. Then on Saturday, George Springer left the affair with a fracture on his big left toe after fouling the ball off it.

As for updates regarding the position players, nothing was noted about Kirk, but Barger will seemingly get some rehab games, while Springer is feeling better. Additionally, Tyler Heineman has had some back spasms the last few days, while Yimi García and Bieber threw bullpens on Tuesday.

Your #BlueJays injury updates, from Milwaukee:

All of this has combined for a 6-9 record, and just three wins over their last 12 games. The Blue Jays look to right the ship on a lengthy road trip, taking on the Milwaukee Brewers for three-game, the Arizona Diamondbacks for a three-game weekend series, and finally the Los Angeles Angels for three games.
