R-Truth Explains Why He Can’t Fully Be a Heel in WWE

R-Truth knows fans have a hard time seeing him as a true heel, and he believes that comes down to who he is outside the ring.

While speaking on Six Feet Under, Truth explained that he tries to bring positivity to people even when he is dealing with his own struggles. Because of that, he feels fans know his real personality too well to fully buy him as a bad guy.

“I think because people know who I am outside of wrestling too. Like, I can’t really be a bad guy. I try to be positive with everybody. Even if I’m going through something myself, I don’t want to put that on people. I know what it feels like to not have positivity around you, so if somebody sees me, I want them to leave happier than when they saw me. That’s just genuinely who I am.”

Undertaker then explained that the reaction Truth received during his WWE contract situation showed how much respect he has earned over the years. He said people across WWE and the fanbase rallied behind Truth because they know how he treats others.

“You don’t get that kind of reaction unless you’ve treated people the right way for years. Talent, crew guys, production people, the fans — they all rallied behind you because they know who you are.”

Truth also reflected on the “We Want Truth” chants and how much that moment meant to him personally. He said his son was there when it happened, and his reaction made Truth look back on all the sacrifices that come with a long wrestling career.

“Man, hearing that… there’s really no words for it. My son was standing behind me when all that happened, and he told me, ‘Dad, it was worth it.’ And that hit me hard because of all the stuff you miss in this business — birthdays, anniversaries, funerals, family time — all that sacrifice. To hear that from him… it meant everything.”

This comes after Booker T recently defended Truth on the No Contest Wrestling podcast. Booker said criticism of Truth’s career says more about the people making those comments than it does about Truth himself.

“Look at R-Truth—sometimes when I hear people nag or say something negative about him and what he’s done throughout his career, this awesome career that he’s had, it really lets me know what kind of people they are. It lets me know there are a lot of miserable people out there who wish they could be in R-Truth’s spot more than anything.”

He also praised Truth for turning his personality and entertainment value into a long-term WWE role that very few performers could have maintained. Booker then pointed out that Truth created a spot on WWE television that only he could fill.

“So I give R-Truth so much credit for being able to parlay his success over so many years—decades of success inside that square circle and on camera. Because this job, man, it’s a hectic job. There are a lot of people out there who just wish negative on you. But like I said, R-Truth has done something that not too many people can do. And R-Truth created that on his own. He literally created a spot on the show that was made for him and him only.”

Truth’s latest comments show why that connection has lasted so long. Fans may chant for him, laugh with him, or rally behind him, but they know there is a real person behind the character who has spent decades treating people the right way.
