Rangers promote Tanner Glass to new Director of Player Development

After firing Jed Ortmeyer yesterday, the Rangers have promoted Tanner Glass to the position as new Director of Player Development. This was always the most likely possibility, as Glass was the Assistant Director before Ortmeyer was let go. It wasn’t likely Drury was going to find a replacement outside the organization. The reactions are as expected, given his tenure in New York, but to be fair we really should give Tanner Glass the benefit of the doubt.

Rangers player development probably can’t get much worse, so giving Glass a bit of leeway heading into his new role is the right thing to do.

Remember, the most skilled players rarely make the best coaches. Just look at Wayne Gretzky. Meanwhile it’s the guys with shorter careers that wind up being the best coaches. So let’s see how this works. But to be fair to the doubters, Glass is fighting an uphill battle.
