The New York Rangers have re-signed goalie Dylan Garand to a two year contract with a cap hit of $875,000 at the NHL level. The contract is a two way contract, so Garand will earn less in the AHL should he wind up there. Garand is expected to be the Rangers backup goalie this season, replacing the retiring Jonathan Quick. The AHL goalies are expected to be Spencer Martin and Callum Tung. Though this could all change.
What’s interesting about Dylan Garand’s extension is the fact it’s a two way contract. It is probably just insurance in case his game disappears and he can’t back up Igor Shesterkin, but it’s still interesting since it may signal the Rangers aren’t 100% sold on Garand as the backup.
Worth noting (again) that this isn’t a video game, and two way/one way contracts have no bearing on waivers. Garand is not waivers exempt next season. That makes the two way contract even more intriguing.
