In some cases, whenever Darren Turcotte’s name is mentioned in conversations about the Rangers, it’s usually about him being a trade piece, along with James Patrick, in that famous three-team deal with Hartford and Chicago that brought Steve Larmer to New York. To others, Darren Turcotte was one of the Rangers’ better young forwards during the late 80s and early 90s.
From 1989 to 1993, Turcotte was a mainstay in the Rangers lineup, putting up four seasons of 20-plus goals and 50-plus points, including two seasons where he hit or went over the 30-goal threshold. After finding out Turcotte was a favorite of Rob and Dave, I set out to do a bit of research on him and was surprised to see how skilled he was as a Ranger. Not that I didn’t think he wasn’t skilled, but from judging from the videos, he was pretty damn good and really hit home the point on why he was a favorite to those two and many who were and still are Ranger fans.
Not exactly a number one center type, but seemingly a guy who could add a ton of depth and grit to a contending team, and if I were alive (born in 1993) during his time as a Ranger, I more than likely would have had him as one of my favorites.
Turcotte was also one of the fastest skaters in the NHL 93 and NHL 94 video games, which certainly helped his popularity.
